Videography for Digital Films

digital-film-maac-animation-kolkata
Videography refers to the process of capturing moving images on electronic media, for example: videotape disk recording. The word Videography comes from the Latin word, where video means “I see” or “I apprehend” and Graphy means “To Write”, in short it means Videography. The term includes methods of video production and post-production.

Digital Videography

Digital videography in the late 20th century blurred the distinction between videography and cinematography. Any work related to outside commercial motion picture production is known as Videography.
There was an era where, with the advent of computers and internet, videography covered not only shooting video with the camera but also included the digital animation, gaming, video blogging etc. In this field, videographers produce their assets entirely on the computer.
A videographer can be a camera operator. Videography refers to a specific method of combining both pictures with the sound recording. There is way of creating a video by capturing moving images and combining and deducting the parts through video editing...Read More

COMPLETION JOURNEY OF 24FPS 2016 VFX CHALLENGE BY MAAC KANKURGACHI

The VFX lab at MAAC Kankurgachi has been bustling with activity these past few months as The Invisibles spent hours poring over computer screens to wrap up the 24FPS’16 VFX Challenge. The clip of choice was one from 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and while it may have looked simple at the onset, it proved itself to be a worthy task for a challenge.
Any member of the team would say that the best journeys are the ones that are memorable, and over the past few months they have bonded wonderfully as they worked to finish the project.
From meeting to select the clip, to arranging the shoot and collaborating with one another during the crucial post-production period, there has been much they have learned. However, all good things must come to an end, and this year’s 24FPS competition is no exception.
maac kankurgachi
With months of hard work finally composited into around thirty seconds of footage on its way for judging, it was a bittersweet moment for the team members as they put up their poster on the centre’s event board.
Many little hurdles were overcome over adda-filled evening breaks – and a few sleepless nights at MAAC Kankurgachi to fill all the ticks on the work progress table. There was laughter and jokes on the final evening, and above all a sense of relief and accomplishment as the DVDs were labelled and packed.

Now that the project is over, it’s time to unwind and the team is looking forward to the upcoming awards ceremony in Mumbai. But that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for these fifteen...Read More

Importance of Lighting in Photography

Today we are going to discuss about the importance of light during “Photography”. Light and illumination are the basics of photography. The very word “Photography” comes from Greek words, ‘Photo’ means light and ‘Graphics’ means drawing. Hence photography can be described as “Drawing with Light”
Lighting plays a crucial role in photography. Without light there is no illumination. It can bring a photograph to life. It can generate effects, including spectacular shadows and silhouettes. Say for example- In a room without illumination everything is pitch black we can’t see anything, taking a shot assuming the camera allows to produces a solid black photograph. Now if we switch on the light everything is illuminated.
Lighting determines not only darkness or brightness but also tone, mood and atmosphere. Therefore it is necessary to control and manipulate light correctly in order to get the best texture, vibrancy of color and luminosity of the subject. Without good light, even the most compelling subject won’t make for an interesting photograph.
Even natural light comes in four basic varieties. Soft light, front light, side light and back light. Soft light works best for colorful subjects.
  1. Softlight: While direct sunlight emphasizes the contrast between light and dark soft light heightens color contrasts, and can emphasize subtle tints that would be lost in the sun...Read More

The Art of Animation – A Brief History

Broadly speaking, the term ‘Animation‘ means the art of moving images.
Now, animation is of two types, one is the traditional animation, and the other is the computer animation. Traditional animation is done purely by drawing the different poses of a character or an object on special types of semi-transparent papers, known as celluloid sheets.
It is also known as cel animation. Whereas, Computer animation is done using the different software which are specially designed to carry out such types of task eg 3Ds Max, Maya etc to name a few. Traditional animation was being done long before personal computers were invented.
Computer animation is again subdivided into two types. One is the 2D animation and the other is the 3D Animation.2D animation deals with two dimensional shapes which move on a two dimensional plane. Here the characters are designed using 2D shapes like circles, ovals, rectangles etc. Tom & Jerry, Chhota Bheem , Doraemon are good examples of 2D animation.
3D animation deals with three dimensional shapes, which move in a three dimensional space. In case of 3d animation, the characters or objects are modeled using 3d shapes, like sphere, cone cylinders etc.Ice Age is a good example of a 3d animated movie.
In case of animation, different poses of the same character or an object are made in a sequence either by sketching or digitally and then they are moved in rapid succession to create an illusion of a fluid movement. Each of these drawings is referred to as frames. The speed at which the frames move is referred to as frame rate. It is measured in frames per second or fps. The normal broadcasting frame rate is kept at 24fps...Read More

Have a look below:

Later, to showcase a continuous movement of a character for a short duration, Phenakistoscope was widely used. Then came Flipbooks in which every frame was drawn by hand on a piece of paper, and then the book was flipped rapidly. This showed an optical illusion as if the drawn object was moving. maac-animation-kolkata
Some Interesting Facts for you today!!
As we all use Google thousands of time daily so we must know some inner history of it.
Google word has no meaning. Actually the founders supposed to register their company’s name and domain as Googol and googol.com respectively but mistakenly it is registered to Google and google.com and didn’t change it. Googol is a mathematical word which means a numerical value of 1*10^100 (1 followed by 100 zeros). Google.com domain was registered on 15th September 1997. But officially Google celebrates its birthday on 27th Sept 1998, so Google became adult now. Google.com is the rank 1 holder website globally.
This is the most visited website in the universe. Can you imagine how much traffic is generated by this? It is 60,000+ searches each second. And daily 16% of the search entries are unknown to Google that means daily 16% searches are made first time on its search engine. People views 6,00,00,00,000 hours video each month on Google’s YouTube. For street map view, Google has taken pictures of 8.46 lac kilometer roads. In 2013, Google got down for 5 minutes which results 40% down in whole internet traffic. Now-a-days Google becomes a verb used by all, “Google it”. In 1999, its founders try to sold it in 10 Lac Dollars but none bought it.
Today Google’s income is 5,00,00,00,000+ rupees daily in which 90% comes from advertisements. It buys at least one company each week on an average since 2010. You might be shocked by knowing that you need not to be educationally certified to work with Google. 14% of the employees of Google have never gone to any college yet. The most interesting thing is they have Goat instead of grass cutter/gardeners, goat eats the grasses so they need not to cut it. Do you know what the main motive for not using grass cutter is? Let me tell you, they don’t want to do sound pollutions and the employee must not get disturbed by the sound of the machine.
Google is only company who takes care of the environment so much. Please note our fact source is Google itself.

The Angry Bird-3D- Animation Movie (2016)

The Angry Birds Movie is an American 3D adventure comedy film adapted from the game series of the same name made by Rovio Animation. The Angry Bird game was first released in December 2009 and became the most downloaded mobile game ever. The movie was directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly.
It was written by Jon Vitti. This film was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks. The film was officially announced in December of 2012. The seed of the film were planted back in 2011 between executive producers Mikael Hed (Rovio founder and former CEO) and David Maisel (Marvel Studios founder).

So, the question is what was challenge in this animated movie? The challenge was of translating a famous 2D app into a 3D animated movie to portray the ‘angriness’ of the birds. For that, animation supervisor Pete Nash from Sony Pictures Imageworks took the responsibility.
Nash came up with a highly stylized approach for the main character Red. His clenching toes, gritting teeth and furrowing brows gave a natural look of angriness in him. Then comes the other character Chuck who has almost perfect control of his body.
Here Sony Pictures incorporated observations from actual birds into Chuck’s animation. Another challenge was all the characters in the game did not have arms or legs, for these elements the studio had to revisit for the film.

"Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly have taken one step up from animation to direction. Clay Kaytis mentioned in his interview that he is proud of his word and not to forget the entire crew of Sony Pictures Imageworks, “I am always tickled and I always have a smile on my face when I watch my work go by. It’s just nice to know that I can lead a crew in terms of making a film that I am really proud of animation-wise. I have crazy high standards and the crew; they just knocked it out of the park”
Josh Greenstein, Sony’s president of worldwide marketing and distribution also said that it’s very difficult to turning a video game property into a successful movie.
