Spellbinding ‘Story Development’ MAAC Ultadanga Seminar

In today’s blog we are going to inform you about another seminar on Story Development which held recently on 27th July 2019 at MAAC Ultadanga Centre from 2 pm to 5 pm.

This seminar was taken by Dr. Krishnendu Chatterjee an eminent personality in the Bengali Entertainment Industry.

Dr. Krishnendu Chatterjee has directed Bengali short film, feature film and wrote scripts for many popular Bengali Serials.

Some of the television programs for which he wrote scripts are Mirakkel Akkel Challenger,Banglar Sera Paribar (Zee Bangla), Chaka Chak Comedy Chak (Colours Bangla), Singing Star (Rupashi Bangla) and the list goes on.

Active Participation of MAAC Students

In this MAAC Ultadanga seminar Dr. Krishnendu Chatterjee a well-known scriptwriter elaborated the topic Story Development which he introduced in his previous workshop.

He went into the explanation of story development process and how to approach the same.

For MAAC students this seminar was extremely important as story development is the part of their curriculum structure and the basis of entertainment medium

Large number of MAAC students participated in this seminar held at MAAC Ultadanga Centre on 27th July to learn the art of story development from the master Dr. Krishnendu Chatterjee.

Story Development is the initial part of MAAC’s detailed course which is essential for every student of MAAC before jumping into animation or live-action movie making process.

Crafting a good story is essential in gaming industry, animation industry, advertisements and feature films.

The main purpose of this seminar was to ignite the young minds for brilliant creative works.

This event helped the participants to prepare themselves for the Script to Screen category competition which occur every year during 24FPS Short Film Festival organised by MAAC Kolkata.

Students showed very enthusiasm for this seminar as everyone actively participated in this event.

Classroom of MAAC Ultadanga was beautifully arranged and decorated too for this seminar especially by our students.

The registration process for this event made us awe.

Nitty – Gritty Of Story Development

Dr. Krishnendu Chatterjee shared his ideas on different ways to develop the storyline for the audio/video medium.

As a successful scriptwriter he has vivid experiences about story development for different genre.

His short film Satya Dar Coaching has already been praised by the viewers which is in both comic and horror genre and feature film Ka Kha Ga Gha is in comic genre for regional audience.

Our guest speaker gave tips and tricks to our students on how to add comedy, romantic or thrilling touch to the story while developing the script.

Story Development takes place at pre-production process.

A scriptwriter is free to do experiments with the storyline of the script before presenting it on the big screen.

Dr. Krishnendu pointed that while writing script the writer must sketch the characters and plot of the scene so that the director or the actor can get the detail picture of the story from the script.

To build characters within a story the writer must carefully observe people’s day to day activities, their behavioural pattern and style of speaking.

A good script with good storyline is the backbone of every successful film.

A script without proper detail causes difficulties for the filmmaker or the director to get the grip over the narrative.

A story with proper beginning, climax and end catches viewer’s attention effectively.

Every story carries a certain mood and setting that mood for the story is very important.

For example horror story has a certain mood whereas romantic has certain.

Mood of the story should be highlighted with the set design to mesmerise the audience.

Dialogues help to build the mood of a story and so narration of the story must be powerful and compact.

Well-written dialogue leaves more impact on the audience thinking process.

In other words dialogues are the building blocks of story development process.

Throughout the seminar Dr. Krishnendu’s words created a very creative environment among the students.

Without any hesitations our students placed their doubts and queries in front of him.

The session left everyone amused as lot of new ideas, thoughts and imaginations were displayed for this three hour long event.

Each one participant was deeply engrossed in the seminar.

A Welcome Play Based On Movie

MAAC Students were so excited for this seminar that they prepared a play to welcome Dr. Krishnendu.

The play was based on the movie Hirak Rajar Deshe (In the Land of Diamond King) directed by Satyajit Ray in the year 1980.

Student participants presented the play with the dialogues from this movie Hirak Rajar Deshe in front of our guest speaker.

They even created a rough portray of Dr. Krishnendu on the white board with his name mentioned on the drawing.

Our speaker was overwhelmed by the display of respect and affection shown from the participants.

He appreciated portray of himself which resembled actor Utpal Dutt the king of Hirak.

This play added more colours to the seminar.

During the play more emphasis was given on the style of throwing of dialogues.

With great attention Dr. Krishnendu heard the play and felt impressed by student’s creativity and imagination.

He liked the way they built the characters with the dialogues from the movie Hirak Rajar Deshe.

It was a fun filled and interactive play enjoyed by everyone.

Three hour long seminar ended with lot of zeal and participants enjoyed the process thoroughly.

Super MAAC ites Takes Credit For Super 30

Today in this blog we will share the challenging yet interesting artistic experiences of three musketeers who where once the students of MAAC Chowringhee.

Let us introduce you with Suhel Rahman, Sandeep Chatterjee and Prasanta Biswas who all recently worked in the Post-production stage of the movie Super 30 as a VFX Roto/Paint Artist under the guidance of director Vikas Bahl.

Movie Super 30 released in theatres on July 2019 is based on the life of mathematician Anand Kumar and his educational program Super 30.

Three Musketeers Of MAAC Chowringhee

Meet artist Suhel Rahman who joined ADVFX Plus Course as a student in MAAC Chowringhee Centre and passed out in the year 2017.

Artist Sandeep Chatterjee also completed ADVFX Plus Course from MAAC Chowringhee Centres in the year 2017.

Artist Prasanta Biswas too like Suhel and Sandeep has done the ADVFX Plus Coursefrom MAAC Chowringhee Centre in the year 2017.

Now days both Hollywood and Bollywood movies are made with the integration of live-action and Visual Effects.

In film industry demand for skilled and trained VFX artist is growing to work on national and international projects and to bring director’s vision to life.

Suhel Rahman, Sandeep Chatterjee and Prasanta Biswas after completing their ADVFX Course in 2017 appeared for their campus interview and they cleared it in one chance.

Three of them were selected to Red Chillies VFX Company located at Mumbai.

It is the talent and hard work which landed three of our MAAC student Suhel Rahman, Sandeep Chatterjee and Prasanta Biswas into Red Chillies VFX.

At Red Chillies VFX they are working as Roto/Paint Artist.

As Roto/Paint Artist their work is quite challenging; each new project brings new challenges for the artist to work on.

They tackle complex Rotoscoping work like removing or separating the character from the background of an image and replacing the background or placing the character in different image of the shot.

Roto/Paint Artist removes the wires, does the image compositing, colour correctionand shares new ideas.

They need to perform their work in great detail so that audience should not feel the visual jerk and could see the seamless images on screen.

Roto artists work in a team under the supervision of VFX department head.

Our Alumni Suhel Rahman, Sandeep Chatterjee and Prasanta Biswas as Roto/Paint artist have worked in Bollywood movies like Zero, Badla, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and very recent one Super 30.

The VFX team including Suhel Rahman, Sandeep Chatterjee and Prasanta Biswas won the Best VFX award for the movie Zero in the year 2018.

In film Zero; Shah Rukh Khan played the role of dwarf Khan where he was shrank to 4 feet 6 inches for the screen; Red Chillies VFX team delivered lot of efforts to create this amazing appearance of the actor.

Our MAAC musketeers put their best into this film and their hard work received recognition in the form of award.

Our Musketeers Suhel Rahman, Sandeep Chatterjee and Prasanta Biswas shared the VFX task for the film Badla along with other Red Chillies VFX artists.

This movie too has VFX heavy sequences crafted by the VFX team.

Suhel, Sandeep and Prasanta have contributed also in the film Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga as Roto/Paint Artist.

Praises Earned Through Hard Work

Super 30 is the recent movie where Suhel Rahman, Sandeep Chatterjee and Prasanta Biswas contributed as a VFX team under Red Chillies VFX production.

The above image is the acknowledgement card mentioning the name of Suhel Rahman along with other VFX artist of the production house.

Sandeep Chatterjee’s name is also present with Suhel in the title credit of Super 30 film.

Here is the name of Prasanta Biswas mentioned on the title card of the film.

Within the VFX team of Red Chillies each and every artist has equal contribution in making the story on the life of mathematician Anand Kumar stunning and seamless.

Roto/Paint artist job is quite herculean task; it needs lot of effort, patience and co-ordination with the team members.

So the credit that they earned for movie Super 30 is really valuable and most worthy reward.

Suhel Rahman, Sandeep Chatterjee and Prasanta Biswas have made us proud and has set example for the trainee artists.

Lift Off Film Festival Our Moment Of Pride With MAAC Chowringhee

We take immense pride in stating that our 3d animated short film “Gulaal” by student of MAAC Chowringhee has been shortlisted and nominated at Lift-Off Film Festival, UK.

Lift-Off Film festival, London came into being in 2010 inviting entries from all over the globe.

The initial response itself was overwhelming in quantity as well as quality.

The creation of the London Lift-Off Film Festival was led by the need to showcase the exceptional talents hidden behind the global indie films.

In it’s first year itself it received around 750 films across globe, outstanding both in quality and ambition.

From a small cinema in North West London, to the prestigious and beautiful screening rooms of Soho and West London — London Lift-Off has entertained and stunned audiences by continuously delivering on it’s platform exceptional work coupled with amazing networking and brilliant press coverage.

All of the awards are decided on audience choice and our winners get to potentially enjoy full official selections at every-single subsequent Lift-Off Film Festival around the world.

MAAC Chowringhee short film by students getting nominated for the same is a matter of great pride for us.

For a sneak peek on the whole movie making process and experience, let us take you on a short trip to behind the scenes of the said short film with MAAC Chowringhee.

The idea of the same sprung from the theme that was given for the 24 FPS international Awards, 2018.

MAAC Chowringhee participated in the same with a team of 15 students, who were all selected through a process of tests.

With the team complete towards the end of May, 2018; the story development kicked off as all the students went through several brain storming session to come up with story ideas conforming to the theme.

Going back and forth with minor changes with the script we finally locked the story in place and thus, entered a new phase of character and environment design.

The character design was a tedious process that MAAC Chowringhee students went through starting with scrounging for reference and then chalk out a base design.

Which then went through close scrutiny, feedback and multiple levels of improvisations to reach the stage of finalization.

The same procedure was adopted for all the characters.

Till the end of July,2018 we were done with the designing process and ready to jump into 3d to build the whole movie.

Running parallel to the whole designing process was the storyboarding process.

Here a small group of students were being busy bees figuring out how the story is going to look through a camera.

MAAC Chowringhee students were busy in drawing and then redrawing all the shot angles, layouts and setting compositions.

The shots were then tested in 3d and made out into a small animatics, which was to serve as the basic animation reference for the entire movie.

With the basic animatics reference almost ready we took the plunge into 3d.

The software choice for the process was Autodesk Maya.

The students who were responsible for modeling started with the blocking process working their way one detail level at a time to develop the overall look of the model as true to the design sheet as possible.

Likewise, the environment was also being developed to suit the requirements of the design.

The mentors at MAAC Chowringhee were constantly guiding the students through valuable feedback to come up with the final models, which seemed to do justice to the initial design, although a few liberties were taken here and there to enhance the character’s design.

Closely after the finalization of the models, texturing and rigging processes started simultaneously.

Substance painter was chosen as the go to software for the look and feel development of the textures.

September had kicked in till we entered this stage.

The students and the mentors had gotten a hang of the process till then and were able to work smoothly through it.

With the textures coming along and changing the overall look of the scenes, it really was started to feel alive.

As, for the rigging, it was coming along fast enough and we had decided for a stylized expression of the main characters, using a 2d style.

Somehow, the rigging process seemed to take longer than anticipated especially with skinning.

On the hand scene compilation with the necessary assets according to shot division started.

The necessary camera angles and the layout of the asset as per the storyboard was being done to maintain a seamless file management.

The files were being readied for the upcoming animation phase.

With everything set in place animation was started as soon as the rigging finished one character at a time.

MAAC Chowringhee student team prioritized the character rig requirement as per the number of scenes it was in.

November was already round the corner, till then and we realized the urgency of the situation.

The process picked up pace as soon as this realization dawned on us.

The animated scenes thoroughly checked and corrected were immediately set for lighting and rendering, which easily was the most time consuming phase.

Each scene was broken down into various required elements to facilitate the upcoming compositing process.

It was like all three processes of skinning, animation and lighting were going on simultaneously.

But the process could go on almost smoothly with the already done file management.

Well, that saved the hassle of working and reworking the wrong files, which is common in such scenarios.

Animation took some time as the rigging process finished and slowly lighting took over.

MAAC Chowringhee team tried to set up a basic light before the animation and then refine it once the animation was complete.

Meanwhile, rendering had already occupied quite a few machines leaving just enough to animation.

With the deadline of the 24FPS Animation awards looming in front of the student team, all MAAC Chowringhee student team could then was to wait for the machines to render the files before rushing to composition.

Soon enough, the rendered files became available and so, were the machines as animation reached it’s final stages.

Compositing seemed trivial in compared to the whole experience we lived these few months.

But, it was not to be taken lightly as the overall look depended heavily on how well the various elements were composed together.

Nonetheless, MAAC Chowringhee student team lived through it and the output was good.

Taking this as a good sign student zealously jumped into compositng as fast as they could and also as fast as the renders came out.

The mentors at MAAC Chowringhee, continuously suggested methods to speed up the process.

By end of November finally team managed to put it all together for the final submission.

The students and mentors alike heaved a sigh of relief as the time flew by so fast to even barely take notice.

MAAC Chowringhee student team were awarded with a Jury Special Mention Award at 24 FPS International Animation Awards, 2018 in recognition of the hard work we put in.


And now, are proudly nominated for the Lift-Off Film Festival London, 2019.

What a beautiful start of a new year could it be.

Life Study An outdoor Session With MAAC Kolkata

Greeting of the new year, 2019 from the Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics family, popularly known as MAAC Kolkata.

We are the leaders of cutting edge training in 3D Animation, 2D Animation, VFX, Film Making, Multimedia courses, Gaming, Web Designing, Graphic Designing and Architectural Visualization.

We have excellent connectivity to all three of our centers located at prime locations in Kolkata which is at Chowringhee, Rashbehari And Ultadanga respectively.

New year embarks a fresh start of event of ones life and with this we turn a new leaf and look forward to a better tomorrow.

With a fresh resolution we have also decided to add some zeal and enthusiasm to our education curriculum.

And so, we are ready with our plan of making learning a fun and enjoyable experience for all our students.

Drawing has since time immemorial been the primary visual language for the purpose of communication and expression of ones inner thoughts.

Long before the invention of verbal language, or say sound as a medium of expression, man had scribbled his world with doodles.

He had tried to capture the life around him and also explored his philosophical concepts on the walls of his cave.

Sketching has an immense creative, expressive and educational value.

It is as important as the development of written and verbal skills as the very core concepts of understanding the world sprouts from meaningless doodles.

It enhances ones ability of perception, shape, volume, perspective and actions.

Thus it also finds application in various creative industries such as animation, architecture, design, fashion, film, theatre, performance art and communication design.

So, sticking to our belief that education should not be confined to the classroom walls, we organized an outdoor nature and life study session on the 3rd January, 2018.

The session focused primarily on the study of natural shapes and life forms and also reproducing them on paper with various mediums such as pencil, ink, felt pen etc.

Students from all three centers of MAAC Kolkata are Maac Chowringhee, Maac Rashbehari and Maac Ultadanga were selected for the session on first come first serve basis, to which the students responded enthusiastically.

A total of 17 students were chosen out of the many that registered.

In order to get the most out of the session we needed a place with a lot of activity and subjects to observe, and understand.

So, after careful consideration Esplanade Tram Depot was chosen to be the venue of the session.

The place is buzzing with energy of people rushing through their daily routine.

From schoolchildren to office commuters from fussing parents to street hawkers, we find a fusion of people from different spheres of society.

Students from all three MAAC Kolkata centers (Chowringhee, Rashbehari and Ultadanga) were gathered at Chowringhee center at 12:00 noon and were put under the care of Mr. Pradip Laha and Miss. Priyanka Pyne, who have expertise in this field owing to their years of experience in the same.

From there they proceeded to the venue along with the faculties. Students were required to get their materials with them.

Places like these have always been among the favorite when it comes to study and inspiration for outdoor artists.

Here they get the liberty to observe and choice to capture the different moods, activity, body language and expressions of people.

Under the guidance of the mentors the students set off on their journey of visual observation and recreation of the same on paper or canvas.

Students were given the independence to capture the city and its people from different viewpoints often helped by the faculties to setup interesting viewpoints.

A sunny day out in the midst of winter sure is blissful and so the students enjoyed the day working in an outdoor atmosphere, learning and putting their new found knowledge to practice.

The activity soon grabbed the attention of the numerous passer by, who then couldn’t help but take a peek at the artworks produced by our students.

The venue soon turned to an exhibition which indeed was a showcase of the immense potential of our students.

Seeing our students get praise and recognition from people we as their mentors cannot help but swoon with pride.

Students observed various aspects of life and nature and chose to sketch them out from various angles.

They made their attempts at perspective study, randomness of shapes, colour perspective and relative scale of objects as they are placed at varying perspective depth.

Different sketches had been drawn by the students consisting of the tram with the people travelling in it, people enjoying the sun in the winter afternoon, having street food and indulging in their day to day activities.

At MAAC Kolkata, we not only provide a sound theoretical knowledge of concepts but also believe in hands on practical sessions to make the application of the same crystal clear in the minds of the students.

This particular event helped the students to get real world skills from the real world.

Making a perfect sketch requires a lot of technical knowledge like perspective, proportion of

different objects relative to one another, composition, direction of light, materials, shading etc.

The students needs to have a clear theoretical and practical knowledge of all of these before

making a perfect sketch.

This session forced them to put their creative skills to practice under the constant guidance of our expert faculties.

And they discovered their own potential while putting their talents to test.

Students got the opportunity to share their knowledge with each other coming to terms with their strengths and weaknesses and a way to improve upon them.

The session lasted up to 3 hours and the students were indicated to wind up at 3:30 P.M.

The chilly evening breeze had set in and the students departed from the venue to their respective homes taking with them the abundance of knowledge they received, hopefully looking forward to the next chance they would get to experience such a thing.
