6 SIGNS YOU SHOULD BE WORKING IN ANIMATION

Animation, at its core, is the process of creating motion.

If we are being technical about it, it involves an illusion of motion that is created by producing a series of images (or ‘frames’) that show a sequence of poses with slight changes from one image to the next in order to make a complete action. As a form of art, it has existed for thousands of years.

The earliest evidence of animation is found in cave paintings, which depict people and animals with several legs superimposed on one body to imply motion.

Since then, the concept of sequential drawing has taken on different shapes and forms: the phenakistoscope (a rotating disc with a sequence of images along the edges), the kineograph (better known as the flip book), the cinematograph (or film camera), hand-drawn and cel animation (also known as traditional or classical animation), and modern-day digital animation through computer software in a virtual environment (both two- and three-dimensional).

The phenakistoscope, showing an animation of two people dancing.

 Wall-E, a 3D animated film.

Animation as a medium for visual media became very popular on television with ‘cartoons’ such as Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, Looney Toons and Scooby Doo, and the hit films made by The Walt Disney Company from the 1970s onwards.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast are films that we marvel at even today. Toy Story was the first animated film made entirely using computer software.

Since then there have been several gems of animated films that are made digitally in 3D, like The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Wall-E, Zootopia and more. The animation industry is booming, and without further ado, let us look at some signs that will help you understand if animation is the right-fit career for you.

You Enjoy Creating.

Creating and creativity is the heart and soul of every form of art, including animation. The purpose of art is to evoke emotion in the beholder, meaning that the aim of an artist when making a work of art is not just to represent his or her own thoughts and feelings, but to create them in someone who is an audience as well.

As a song lyric goes, “a story told that can’t be real… somehow must reflect the truth we feel“. Animation is a visual form of expression, and since sight is the most powerful sense for human beings, creativity can go a long way in leaving an impact. And if you enjoy it, not even the sky is the limit.

You Have A Sense Of How Things Move.

Do you find yourself thinking? ‘Hey! To make it seems as though my character is walking, he should be in such and such pose’? If you draw, then you must have had such a thought at some time or another.

Aesthetics or appeal (including visual appeal and presentation) is a crucial part of media, and of animation. Staging and posing are among the basic principles of animation, meaning that if you have an idea of how a character should look, stand, sit – or in a more general way, what shape the character or object’s body should be in – while performing a certain action in a way that a viewer can easily understand, you have an edge in animating.

Also important knows the line of action for any movement. Honing this skill is easy: observe things around you!

Theoretical Knowhow Is Within Your Reach.

For a practical task to be done to its maximum potential, it is necessary that there is a theoretical backing to supplement it.

In addition to being creative and knowing how things move, there are certain rules that are followed when creating an animated sequence – regardless of the mode it is made in.

These rules are called the principles of animation, and they can help you produce a good and appealing clip. MAAC is here to help you brush up on these principles through its various courses in 2D and 3D animation.

Technical Skills For Animating Can Be Developed easily.

Nowadays, both 2D and 3D animation are done digitally – i.e. on a computer using animating software – in most studios. For 2D animation, Adobe Flash is most commonly used, while for 3D animation, Autodesk Maya is the preferred choice.

This software can be mastered with some guidance and practice, which MAAC is ready to provide you with through tailor-made courses depending on which type of animation you want to learn and perfect.

The Animation Industry Is Booming.

If you turn on the TV, you are guaranteed to come across at least one instance where animation has been used. With popular kids’ TV shows made in India like Chhota Bheem, Mighty Raju, Pakdam Pakdai and Motu Patlu airing episodes regularly, the animation industry in India is growing steadily.

If you don’t want to work in TV, there studios that work on film projects, both Indian and international. You could even look for web-based animation series to work on – or start your own if you are feeling entrepreneurial.

There is no dearth of work, only of workers… so it is up to you to step up and choose to follow your career in the realm of animation. Here, too, MAAC will guide you towards the work environment that you prefer.

The Scope Of Animation Is Virtually Endless.

The best thing about animation is that it’s not just limited to one form of media, nor is it only used to create purely animated content.

Animation is applied not only for cartoons, but also in visual effects to create computer-generated characters and moving objects.

And visual effects are used in media ranging from advertisements to TV serials to films and web content. You can create different styles of animation by manipulating the number of frames in every second of action to create stop-motion.

Feature films like Fantastic Mr. Fox and Kubo and the Two Strings were created using traditional stop motion, which used actual models that are manipulated physically and captured on camera. Conversely, films like The Emperor’s New Groove and Warner Bros.

The Iron Giant are full animated, meaning each of the 24 frames in one second’s footage of the films is drawn. Also, there are films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Space Jam, which combine animation with live-action.

So then, what are you waiting for? Jump into the fray and start building your career as an animator today!

With MAAC Chowringhee | Rashbehari | Kakugachi by your side, and the bright future that the industry holds, you simply can’t go wrong!

India’s animation sector is developing at a rapid pace. So as the market of good animator.

Indian animation companies and studios are moving up the value chain function to create and enhance their own intellectual property rights.

Global giants such as Walt Disney, Warner brothers and Sony of late have been seen outsourcing animation characters and special effects from Indian firms.

According to many analysist the animation industry has often been clubbed under the technology sector, according to the entrepreneurs the saying is as follows that in Animation business is 70 percent is art and only 30 percent technology.

Exactly that is the reason why small enterprises driven by the passion of art-loving are getting notable good deals.
With the emerging of the animation industry and huge outsourcing demands, various animation companies have emerged all across India to meet up the said demand.

Metro Cities such as Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Trivandrum are becoming the country’s major animation hubs.

These companies own high-tech studios, employ high-quality and highly-skilled animator and visual effect artist and are backed by huge state-of-the-art equipment.

These companies offer a whole range of services starting  from 2D animation, 3D animation, storyboards, medical animation and animatics to product demos, viral videos, illustrations, logos, banners, portraits and caricatures etc anything you asked for in the said field.

They also provide special services completely customized as per their client’s requirement and taste.

Lets discuss the reasons behind why global entertainment firms are flocking to India are as follows:

a) The  best part is the production cost, cost of animation production in India is actually  one fourth that of  North America and is  about 35 per cent lower than that of countries such as Korea and the Philippines.  Reason is availability of cheap manpower.

The list of countries outsourcing animation production work to India include the US, the UK, France, Italy and Spain, etc.
b) India holds the position of second largest entertainment industry in the world.

Animation studios in the country provide a large pool of low-cost, high-quality professional animator and visual effect artist.

That is the reason to meet the demand we can see the presence of a number of Indian animation companies having set up of  hi-tech studios (equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software) to execute overseas projects.

c) Large English speaking manpower which effectively overcomes the language barrier understanding clients need is very important to deliver best result.

d) Numerous training programs are held at leading advertising and media institutes in the country.

These institutes offer various programs in animation and digital production.

India’s animation entertainment sector has experienced a major boom over the last few years.

Demand for animation production services from India is growing with the emergence of an organized animation production sector the need of skilled labor is in demand, with growing requirement for international TV program production, at very lower costs.

Growth in the sector will be further achieved on the back of increased outsourcing contract work, higher content in movies, more 2D/3D conversion projects, demand for animated TV serials, licensing and merchandising of popular characters.

The trend also intrigues the establishment of numerous new animation companies and animation-related training courses in reputed institute.

Gaining correct knowledge and skills is helping aspirant to build a career in animation industry.

All these developments will drive significant growth, both in terms of revenue and participation in the value chain and will position India as a leading country in animation production and outsourcing in coming years. This means opening of jobs will also increase at the same time.

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID WHILE MAKING CHARACTER ANIMATION DEMO REEL

Demo reel is very important with respect to your employment opportunities in Character Animation as an animator.

Making demo reel is showcasing your skills within a limited time.

The recruiting companies’ checks demo reels of different candidates.

They have to go through many demo reels in less time.

It’s very important to make your demo reel interesting.

There are so many institutes that flood the market with animation graduates every year.

For that it is your demo reel that makes all the difference.

The demo reel should have nice little story with attractive background score.

Rather you can also make combination of different small small demo reels to show case your work.

You need to have a strong character animation in your demo reel.

Remember, demo reel is animator’s creativity.

If you want yourself selected by the recruiters then your demo reel should stand out of the crowd.

In this blog we will work on the common mistakes that should be avoided when making character animation demo reel.

Animation of character is putting your heart and soul into that character.

The character should be imaginative and funny at the same time.

Sometimes the animator’s demo reels are good but there are many mistakes that make the character less interesting.

These mistakes are very crucial when you are appearing for recruitment process.

So keep your demo reel very simple, strong and unique.

Let’s look at the common mistakes that animators makewhile creating demo reels.

Speed

The most common mistakes of all is the mismatching of the speed and mass of your object.

You must know the fact that in reality if an object is fat its speed automatically slows.

So if you are designing a character which is fat then always keep in mind that its speed should be relevant to its weight.

All characters are unique in their own way. To make our characters interesting we make them of various sizes and shapes.

So it is very important to decide its speed factor.

For example if you are designing a large bulky dinosaur then its speed cannot be fast. This affects the character when screening it.

Make the mass and speed relatable.

Rotoscoping

Rotoscoping is a technique that uses the reference of live action photos frame by frame and these photos are redrawn as drawings using animation to make it more realistic.

This is a projection technique used by animators to make their animation more relatable with reality.

Though it is a very good approach for learning projection but most animators fail to remember that.

Your animation cannot be the exact same copy of some photographs that already exists, Right!. You need to add some precise modifications to it.

These small modifications will make your way out of rotoscoping.

Too much Imagination

Imagination is the key factor of making demoreel.

Imagination up to a certain point is Ok, butwhen it goes far away from reach of reality then it proves to be harmful for getting your demo reel selected by recruiters.

As you can see imagination is important as well as critical at the same time.

So while creating your character be as imaginative but don’t fail to keep it related to reality.

Make it over perfect

Detailing in the animation is the most important thing.

You must work on the detailing in your demo reel.

Adding a little messiness purposefully is a good idea, but it should be as acute as possible.

You know a little dirtiness in the character is good which makes it more near to reality.

Adding detailing to your demo reel will make it more likeable and appealing.

Your work should make audiences feel real.

For example if a character is moving his hand then a moving muscle can be shown to add extra effect to it.

Your audience must not only see the animation but also feel it, and then only it is called good animation.

These details totally depend upon your creativity. So it is good idea to make your character a perfect art piece with little mess around it.

Styling

It is a good practice to keep your characters styling consistent. It is common among the animators to be inconsistent among the scenes that the characters play.

The demo reel is the reflection of your work so make it appealing.

If the emotions of the character are changing then styling should be done according to that. You must be very subtle to add messiness in your animation.

Subtlety is very important when doing character animation especially the creature animation.

Adding some curves at right positions and making your actions intersecting in the right time will make your character feel more real.

The character should be though for animation as well as should be easy to understand.

Trends in your field

As a good animator you should always keep yourself updated with the new trends in the market.

These include updates in the technology, which are the new software in the market, their cost, why they are different, and most importantly why they are trending i.e. what are its updated functions?

A good animator always keeps eye on latest updates in the market.

Now a day’s recruiting companies use latest software in the market to provide quality to their clients.

There are two advantages of it Firstly they become the organization using latest software and secondly this updated software’s saves a lot of their time.

Having sound knowledge of these newest trends you can get easily absorbed in these companies.

As demo reels are watched by the recruiting companies, all of the above must be kept in mind.

Make your demo reel look good and feel good. It must be so good that the recruiter should remember it while filtering from demoreels of other artists.

The good animation practices will not only make you a good animator but rather you will start thinking more artistically.

So these were the most common mistakes that animators make.

Try to avoid these errors and clear your way to get recruited in an organization as a character animator.

With Maac Animation Kolkata our training team gives up-most importance in demo reel. They guide you at their best to give you the required career boost.

10 TRAITS OF GOOD ANIMATOR

Animation has a history of more than a hundred years. It is the animator who has created this history in the world of animation.

It has evolved from many stages staring from flat 2d cartoons to 3d animation films.

It has emerged as an industry in recent two decades.

The aesthetics of designing characters has been incredibly changed.

There has been improvement in the way animated films are created.

This has resulted into the increase of viewer’s expectation every year for animated films.

The viewer’s keenness grows as the quality of animation gets improved with release of every new movie. Animators play an important role in making of these movies.

Animators must be a visualizer.

Darren Aronofsky, American film director, says “An animator has to live life twenty-four times than a normal human being do that is every twenty-four frames of a second.”

This is very true as the animator has to craft each and every movement.

There are various aspects that animator has to keep in mind while working on animation films.

A good animator observes everything around and learns.

If you want to become a good animator you must learn to observe things.

You can watch people around you and analyze their behavior.

As this practice is very good for students as you never stop learning and thus start getting better in your field.

It is like a valuable learning experience for budding animators.

Starting a conversation with new peoples will get you know more about them and most importantly you will learn a lot.

While talking to them you can observe their behavior and expressions which will help you building your own character.

Eventually you will start applying those lessons in your story.

One of the important thing while designing a character you have to be very patient and have to keep practicing until you achieve your goal.

The more curious you are, the closer you get to your goal.

You must encircle an environment around the character you are drawing.

The environment has huge influence in the story of that character.

The characters surrounding also affects the characters body mechanism and its behavior.

This will also help you with the projection work while designing its movements and acting.

Designing the character is not just enough for animation.

You also have to learn the camera angle and projection of various things in a particular frame.

For this you can take your phone or camera and click pictures while you are walking around a garden or any place with reference to your story.

Taking pictures will let you learn about understanding perspective.

This will also help in framing your work. Composing the work together results in doing better layering procedure.

Though the animation is mostly depends on the creativity of the animator, but there are some traits that do matter while designing the characters.

These traits will help making them cute, approachable and lively. Let’s see them one by one:

Creativity

Characters ever since from its beginning have always been simple and easy to animate.

The design of the character must be appealing. It should enable the audiences to like the character.

So you have to be creative as well as you have to keep your character simple while paying attention to the details.

There should not be the complexities related to them. This is what makes them more approachable and likable.

Thinking out of the box makes you a good animator and your character funnier.

Creativity makes you think differently from others. You should know how to artistically moldanything simple into something interesting.

Thus the more artistic you are the more work you get to do.

Humorous

Humor is the key ingredient for becoming a good animator. If you have a good sense of humor your character portrays that automatically.

Comedy is key to likability.

The humor reflects in the characters movement and behavior.

As almost all animated films are targeted for kids, they are made in comedy genre.

So it is important to inculcate sense of humor in your character.

Patient

Patience is what makes an animator, a good animator.

Be patient with your work. You know that Rome was not built in a day.

Do not expect your work should get completed as soon as possible.

Animation is work of patience and hard work. Those animators who put extra time on their detailing go an extra mile further.

Good Observation

You learn by your own observations. For being a good animator you must inculcate this quality in yourself.

A good observant learns from things around him and tries to apply them in his characters.

They are always studying movements of the objects around.  They are often looking for the interesting movements, walks and funny expressions on their face while talking.

The observer tries to apply these qualities to the character and does more exaggeration on them to make them funnier.

So observe.

Learn Acting

This may sound a little bit different.

But if you don’t know anything about acting then how can you make your characters act.

This will help you a lot in studying the body mechanics of a movement.

Acting a scene yourself will let you learn a lot about the body mechanisms. You don’t have to be a good actor for this, just understands basics of it.

Learn to observe and analyses acting of professional actors, plays and interesting performances.

Also don’t forget to note why and how you feel after watching them.

All the animation characters are inspired from reality and are just enhanced for making them more entertaining.

 Interpretation

It is not only important to learn from your reference but also from their reference and interpret it correctly.

A good animator knows the aim of the project and works towards its achievement.

He tries to adapt the reference’s work accordingly. He has a good idea of a particular scene, its motive and importance of its presence in the film.

So only analyzing your referencework is not enough. You have to also analyze its inspiration to get better at it.

By this you may find a better way of doingit. The look and feel of the animation project whether it is a film or a game is very important.

Be Motivated

Motivation for good animator is an essential quality.

If you are not motivated then it is difficult to become good at anything you want in your life.

If you have an idea, just take a paper and start drawing. Don’t wait for other day to come. This is how you can stay motivated.

Detailing

A good animator always pays attention to the details.

An animated sequence is replicated on the screen inspired from the reality.

It is an important skill to detail each and every small thing around the character.

To add detailing is an important ethic for animator’s job. You have to put some extra time to give your character a perfect finishing touch.

Team work

Animation is a team work.

Cooperation with your team member is very important to be fruitful.

You must have good nature and cooperative attitude. There are different people working on different tasks.

You should know how to work with them, listen to them and together achieve the goal of the project.

Toughness

It is not necessary that everyone will like your work as you like it.

You must not be sensitive when some other guy is analyzing your work and criticizing it.

You must learn from your mistakes. If someone don’t like it doesn’t mean you don’t know how to draw a cartoon.

It means that cartoon still needs some improvements.

Just pay attention to all these traits and you know you are on the right path to become a good animator.

The distance between becoming a good animator to becoming a great animator is practicing.

The more you practice the more better you get. So these were some important traits for becoming a good animator.

Master these and you will see yourself standing out from the competition.

We at Maac Animation Kolkata is always there with such aspirant animators.

So now that you have completed your course, and landed with your initial job where you are enterprising enough to induce yourself

Either way, operating as a new comer in animation studio totally different from the regular job in a multinational company.

All the speculation cannot prepare you for the particular demands of the duty. During this we offer you a guide to how can you conduct yourself in animation studio for the primary time. After all, it’s best to be as ready as possible.

Is This Job Full Of Fun?

Yes, it is, and no, it is not. Before you get too confused, let’s make it simpler for you. This is the biggest challenge of working in an animation studio. The studio atmosphere will mostly look like a summer camp.

There will be gossip, casual clothing, planned activities, and snacks fun. But there is also a lot of work to be done at the same time. One works with stipulated dead line.

During your first month on the job, you may be tempted to say a few of these (more than once!) to your Team Leader/ Director:

“This isn’t teaching me anything.”

“This is not part of my job.”

“I don’t know how to do this.”

“I didn’t finish it because it wasn’t important.”

Take our advice; Never say any of these, or anything remotely similar to these. Your first day could become your last in the team. Working in animation studio is not directly connected with your own personal interest; you are there to be a part of a team, and a project where one needs to work together.

Always remember, you are the newest member of the team, and you have to prove your worth and value as a team member.

Make every second count. No one in the team should have any doubt about whether you deserve to come back the next day or not. Instead of looking for fun, look for what more can you do to help the team to succeed.

Hold The Key

No one is indispensable. But that does not mean that you can’t try. After all, can you imagine Pixar without John Lasseter? No you cannot.

Each day will be different while working in an animation studio. Each day will bring new experiences, with new obstacles. And then there would be days when you will hold the key.

Unless you complete your job correctly & effectively, the project cannot move ahead. Make sure that you are the best person for the job. Being under the spotlight can prove to be a lot of pressure.

But concentrate on the bright side. This can be your chance to prove your price.

Do your best, so next time somebody must get employment done, your name is that the initial to appear on.

Presentation Matters

Working in animation studio could be a team effort. Therefore, everyone seems to be perpetually making an attempt to search out the proper set of individuals to have faith in.

Knowing your job, and doing it right, might not be enough.

You further ought to be a people’s person; somebody they will come back to for discussions, rather than somebody scare them away.

All this small small approach can build a large difference in the outlook.

Keep your work station clean. It should not be be chaotic however it shouldn’t be messy.

You are to grasp wherever every factor is, and the way it fits the complete image.

Dress for the occasion. Nobody expects you to be wearing a suit, however dress well. Nobody likes a sloppy dresser.

Whether meeting the team or the chief executive officer or the shopper, you should make an impression.

After all, casual is good, but this is not your friend’s birthday party.

Act Your Age.

Being funny is not equal to being childish. Having fun or sharing a joke is fine, but don’t be the joker all the time.

Making other people aware of your presence by being loud or weird is not appreciated at work place. Your work should be enough to get you noticed, without these extra efforts.

Punctuality is important. You can have a million excuses like a bad traffic jam or the pesky landlord. But a late person usually is not trusted with important conversations & responsibilities.

The creative industry works on the rule, “everything needs to be completed yesterday”. To keep up the pace, plan everything in advance, and be on time.

Present your work with care. You always get the treatment that you give others. The same applies to your work.

If you don’t care about or respect your work, no one will. Don’t expect people to guess the details or understand your ideas magically.

Present them in a proper manner so that it is easy to understand. Even a small thing like spell checking your texts before sending can go a long way in establishing the accuracy of your work.

No dirty linen in public. You may be facing a personal crisis or you may not be getting along with a particular person at work.

Don’t create a scene. And don’t interfere in other people’s affairs. If people don’t respect you, then the brilliance of your work will only take you so far.

Each member of a team is the face of the team.

Being the most recent member you cannot shirk responsibility. Your behaviour and angle can replicate on the name of the team. Confirm that your behaviour provides nobody a chance to raise a finger.

You don’t wish to become the ‘problem’ department – the one whose delays square measure met with scorns, whose issues square measure met with eye rolls.

Ask  Proper Queries

You don’t invariably have all the answers. It’s alright to own queries. However you would like to understand that raised question is valid or not. Before you raise your enquirers to some other person, raise yourself the subsequent questions:
Can I solve this  on my own?

Is this question high priority within the current order of things?

Is this the proper person to answer the question?
