2D to 3D Conversion With Stereoscopic 3D

Hello readers, let’s look upon 2D to stereoscopic 3D conversion in this blog.

The process of transforming 2D flat film to 3D form is called 2D to stereo 3D conversion or in other words it is a technique to enhance the illusion of depth by means of binocular vision.

During this conversion process depth perception is added into the digital images.

The conversion should be done with sufficient accuracy and correctness; the quality of 2D images should not deteriorate.

As more and more films are released in 3D now days, 2D to 3D conversion is becoming more common today.

More often non-CGI stereo 3D blockbusters movies are converted fully or sometimes partially from 2D footage.

Film like Avatar contains 2D scenes and converted to stereo in post-production.

Financial, Technical and Artistic are the reasons behind the shooting in 2D instead of Stereo.

The need for high quality stereoscopic images is growing; 2D to 3D stereo conversion will grow large in future.

Reason For 2D To 3D Stereo Conversion

2D to 3D stereo conversion gave a whole new dimension to Disney movies.

Animated films like Toy Story 3 or Tangled have generated stereo imagery from software like stereo-RenderMan.

3D provides the third dimension of depth which can be perceived by the human vision in the form of binocular disparity.

The advancement in the field of computer animation provides a second camera view which gives depth and volume to each and every 2D frame.

Filming in 3D requires various parameters and is expensive, bulky and complicated; stereo post-production is also expensive and time consuming compared to stereo conversion.

There is a high chance of various mismatches in stereo image like tilt, colour shift, vertical parallax during stereo camera shooting and it can be more complex than stereo conversion.

Stereo post-production is more complex, requires more work, time consuming and not well-established.

Stereo conversion is more cost effective and easy to achieve rather than stereo camera shooting or stereo post-production.

The stereographers uses as many digital retakes as required to perfect angle and depth in order to maximise the quality of each sequence in movie.

By the technique of stereoscopic 3D film artists create visual perception of a 3 dimensional image from the 2D flat surface or 2D image.

Stereoscopic supervisor Bob Whitehill at Pixar Animation Studios says he sets the parameters on a shot-by-shot basis.

Methods of stereo conversion use depth maps based rendering.

A depth map has grey scale that contains information about the interval or gap of the surfaces of scene objects from a viewpoint.

Depth Map is needed to determine the right distribution of the objects for the second eye.

Conversion of 2D image into 3D stereoscopic needs a good depth map first; depth map is consists of various shades of gray to show the depth of every part of the frame.

It requires reconstruction of 3D shapes from single or multi-view depth maps.

Steps for depth based conversion methods are Depth budget allotment, every important surface should be separated and depth map should be created.

Image segmentation, depth map creation are time-consuming steps.

People attached to such work are called depth artist.

Multi-Layering is another technique for 3d stereo conversion in which multi-layering involves implying a depth map to more than one slice of the flat image resulting in a much better depth.

3D reconstruction is also used in stereo conversion; it works well in the scenes with static rigid objects such as shots with buildings, interior shots and soft fuzzy edges.

Key to good 2D to 3D conversion is Depth Maps quality.

Usually depth maps are created for each frame present in the scene.

A good conversion can be achieved by maintaining overall nice working relationship with supervisors.

Filmmakers should make a good film in stereo rather than good stereo film.

Stereo conversion is applied in converting older films such as Star Wars.

Studio like ILM converted Star Wars films for director George Lucas.

Roto tool is used for stereo conversion by volume; it is a time consuming work in conversion process.

Roto helps to outline any character in shot.

Prime Focus converted The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

In the film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader the team used View-D to convert mono shots to final stereo shots in about 8 weeks.

View-D 2D to stereo 3D conversion tool is another example; used after roto.

This was developed in Prime Focus by Chris Bond.

View-D tool allows artists to work on roto and then build second eye and stereo effect.

Ocula has been made by The Foundry in London for stereo post-production; it produced high quality disparity maps for high quality solution.

Many VFX houses use Ocula; it was used for Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

High quality conversion methods should deal with problems like Reflections, Film Grain, scenes with fast erratic motion etc.

In case of automatic conversion, a depth map of the entire scene can be calculated through camera motion.

In 2008 Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films depended on In –Three for the live action 2D to 3D conversion of movie G-Force and Sony Pictures Image works converted CG animated scenes.

Disney returned to In –Three for the film Alice in Wonderland.

In-Three was founded in 1999 and patented a process called Dimensionalization t which helps to convert 2D films into high quality 3D films or development in stereoscopic reconstruction of two dimensional images.

Artists face challenged in handling finest details in Alice in Wonderland as women had wispy hair; there were leafy trees and lot of vegetations.

Stereoscopic films have influenced cinema a lot and will continue to impress audience in near future.

Standard release of the film Clash of the Titans occurred first and then 3D converted version was released in the same year.

View-D conversion process was used to convert the movie into 3D.

Pixar One Of The Finest Animation Studio

Hello Readers, today through this blog we will take you into the domain of Pixar Animation Studio.

How can we forget the vivid, brilliant and vibrant moving images of the films like Cars, Toy Story, Incredibles, Coco, Finding Nemo and Ratatouille.

For all those stunning Movies the credit goes to none other than Pixar, one of the finest animation studios in the world.

We generally see a hopping desk Lamp with the name Pixar, Luxo Jr. is studio’s mascot.

Founder George Lucas was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award by the Venice Film Festival on September 2009.

Pixar Animation Studio

Pixar Animation Studio is based in Emeryville California, currently owned by Walt Disney Company.

This American animation studio started in 1979 when founder George Lucas recruited Edwin Catmull from New York Institute of Technology to head Lucas film’s computer Division.

Edwin Catmull contributed in many important developments in computer graphics.

In 1986 Steve Job purchased the Computer Division from George Lucas and established an independent company Pixar with 40 people employed and Catmull became Chief Technical Officer.

As Walt Disney Studio was interested in Pixar Image Computer, Pixar and Disney started collaboration on Computer Animation Production System (CAPS) which revolutionized the creation of traditional animated films.

Pixar Animation Studio is famous for CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) animated feature films created with RenderMan-Rendering Application Programming Interface which is used to generate high-quality images.

Pixar Animation Studio created RenderMan, a 3D rendering software used to render Pixar’s in-house 3D animated movie productions and also available as a commercial product to other companies.

The digital revolution in filmmaking was driven by applied mathematics along with computational physics and geometry.

Short Film Luxo Jr. is one of the first projects completed by Pixar in the year 1986.

John Lasseter wrote and directed this 2 minute short film.

The story revolves around one large and one small desk lamp.

Luxo Sr. is the larger lamp while Luxo Jr. is the smaller lamp, junior lamp plays with a ball that flattens accidently.

The hopping desk lamp is included in the Pixar’s corporate logo.

The director John Lasseter wanted to complete this short film for the 1986 SIGGRAPH, an annual computer graphics conference attended by many industry professionals.

This animated film displayed the use of shadow maps within the rendering software, CGI Shadows were created by adding darken as well as flattened version of the shadowed object.

John Lasseter put the classic animation principles popularised by Disney’s Nine Old Men to convey the lamps’ emotions.

Edwin Catmull and Lasseter worked around the clock and the film took four and a half month to complete.

Pixar has made both feature films and short films, Toy Story (1995) is the first-ever computer animated feature film.

After the success of Pixar’s short film Tin Toy in the 1988, Disney approached to Pixar to produce computer-animated feature film.

With Walt Disney Animation Studio, Pixar made a historic $26 million deal to produce three computer-animated feature films and Toy Story was first of them.

Toy Story (1995) is the Pixar’s first feature film entirely computer-animated and first feature film directed by John Lasseter.

About 27 animators worked on the film Toy Story, Woody character was the most complex as he required 723 motion controls including 212 for face and 58 for his mouth.

Each and every shot of this film passed through the hands of eight different teams, the art department finalised the colour scheme and general lighting for each shot.

For this film the shading team used RenderMan’s shader language to create shader programs for each model’s surface.

Each frame took 45 minutes to 30 hours to render depending upon the complexity.

Toy Story required 800,000 machine hours and 114, 240 frames of animation in total.

Academy Award Winning Movies by Pixar Animation Studio

Fizt allowed Sulley’s (furry blue monster) fur to react in a more natural way.

Fizt program also helped to control the movement of the Boo’s clothes in the film.

Produced by Pixar Animation Studio Finding Nemo made in the year 2003 won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

To make the movement of the fish believable, animators took a crash course in fish biology and oceanography.

Animators visited aquariums, did diving in Hawaii and received lectures from ichthyologist

Pixar Animation Studio’s Superhit film The Incredibles (2004) received widespread approval from critics and won two Academy Awards.

The animation team of Pixar Studio worked hard to animate all human cast of this film, which required creating new technology to animate detailed human anatomy, clothing and realistic skin and hair.

In The Incredibles the skin of the characters gained a new level of realism from a technology called Subsurface Scattering.

Disney purchased Pixar in the year 2006 and Cars (2006) is the Pixar’s last independently produced film.

Computers used in the development of this film were four times faster than those used in The Incredibles.

Before making the film director John Lasseter visited Ford Motor Company to learn how real cars were designed.

Animators worked for many months on figuring out the movement of the cars.

The World of Animation 2D & 3D

As we all know Animation is a technique to give motion to the still images.

Animation gives the life to the characters and elements which help to communicate with the audience.

Animations are made with Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI).

Animation is achieved by a rapid succession of continuous images that slightly differ from each other.

Computer animation has become popular since Toy Story (1995), the first fully computer animated feature-length animated film.

Animated films are based on animal characters, Giant, machines, or cartoon-like humans.

Now a day Animation studios are creating realistic-looking humans. Films that have attempted this include Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within in 2001, Final Fantasy: Advent Children in 2005, The Polar Express in 2004 etc. Films like ‘The Incredibles’ and ‘Up’ have humans as protagonists, while films like ‘Avatar’ combine animation with live action to create humanoid creatures.

Computer Animation can be divided into 2D and 3D Animation.

2D Animation

In 2D animation artist creates movement in a two-dimensional space.

It requires creativity and technological skills. 2D animation helps to create characters, storyboards and backgrounds in two-dimensional environments.

Traditional 2D Animation is a technique where images are hand-drawn with every image showing some fine changes from the other image.

2D Animated Pictures are flat, without depth and shows one perspective. Objects and characters are usually drawn without fine soft shadows that we see in real life and colours have less varying shades.

2D animation uses Bitmap and Vector graphics to create and edit the animated images and is created using software programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Flash, Adobe After Effects and Anime Studio.

These animations are used in advertisements, films, television shows, computer games or websites.

Creation of 2D animation requires: Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production.

In the stage of Pre-production each shot need to be drawn correctly.

Here the main action in each scene is drawn in a comic book-like form. Storyboard is completed during this stage.

In 2D animation, character moves from one key-frame to another, thus giving an illusion of continuous movement.

The drawings are divided into “keys” and “in-betweens”. Keys have important drawing that shows the extremes of the character’s movement.

The first drawing is always a key-while “in-between” are the less important drawings in the shot. During Production motion is added to the characters.

Rotoscopy
Anime
Onion skimming
Twining
 Morphing

The above mentioned points are the main techniques used in 2D Animation.

Finally in Post-Production: Audio, music, sound effects, visual effects are added to the animation. Animation is edited with editing software and then final output comes.

Examples of 2D Animation are Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Snow white, the little mermaid etc.

Animation World @ Animation KolkataAnimation World @ Animation Kolkata

Why 2D animation:-

Since its advent in the early 1900s, it has provided huge benefits to animated projects.

2D animation is faster to create
as it does not require third dimension.

2D Animation is quicker to produce, requires less time.
It is very simple to redraw errors in 2D Animation.
Production cost is low.
3D Animation

It is the process of generating three-dimensional moving images in a digital platform.

The difference between 2D and 3D animation is the appearance of depth or the three-dimensional features. 2D Animation is a flat animation where all the actions happen in X and Y axis.

Whereas in 3D an extra dimension Z axis is present. Where X denotes height, Y denotes width and Z denotes depth.

In 1972 Edwin Earl Catmull and Fred Parke created the world’s first 3D rendered movie, an animated version of Edwin’s Left Hand. Currently Edwin Catmull is the president of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studio.

The technique of generating 3D Animation can be categorized into three main sections such as Modeling, Layout and Animation and Rendering.

Modeling is the phase that describes the procedure of generating 3D objects within a certain scene. 3D Created scene can easily be viewed from a number of angles.

Skilled Animators create a 3D polygon mesh with various connected vertices to give form to the object or character.

he mesh is then rigged by giving it an armature, a skeletal structure that can be controlled to make the object appear in specific poses.

Layout and animation phase helps in the positioning and animating the objects within a certain scene. Lastly, rendering stage is the end result or output of completed computer graphics.

3D Animation involves the following steps:-

Concept and storyboards
3D Modelling
Texturing
Rigging
Animation
Lighting
Camera Setting
Rendering
Compositing and Special VFX
Music and Foley
Editing and Final output
3D allows to create realistic objects. One can use textures and lighting to create objects that appear solid, and can even be integrated seamlessly into live video elements.

Autodesk 3Ds Max, Autodesk Maya, Cinema 4D, Houdini, ZBrush, and Blender are some of commonly used software used to create 3D animation.

Examples of 3D Animation are films like Toy Story, Shrek, Frozen, The Transformers etc.

3D animation is widely used in the following sectors:-

Architecture, Medical, Aerospace, Engineering, biotechnology, gaming industry, Television Commercials, Educational purpose, films and many more.

Why 3D Animation:-

3D animation is more realistic and exciting
3D models can be reused for future projects.
3D Animation is more popular among the audience
3D Animation requires more time
Other types of 3D Animation are:-

Stop-Motion
Clay Animation
Cel Animation
Paint-On-Glass Animation
In the year 1932, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented award for the first time to the Animated short called ‘Flowers and Trees’ directed by Burt Gillett and produced by Walt Disney Productions.

In India, Film ‘Roadside Romeo’ (2008) was the first 3D animated film, written and directed by Jugal Hansraj Television series ‘Captain Vyom’ had used first VFX and 3D Animation.

The ‘Annie Award’ is presented for excellence in the field of Animation.

Animation is used for entertainment purpose. Along with entertainment it is also an Art form appreciated in all over the world.
