A 3D Logo designer considers lot of things while designing logo for a company.

Most of the famous Logos carry a significant meaning or hidden message within themselves.

Before designing a Logo for a company you need to do a bit research about the company.

Interview the client to get all the necessary information about the brand.

Learn about the industry and its competition.

Check out the current design trends and client’s need.

Secret Criteria For Logo Design

Logos are born from Research.

Each and every logo which is famous now is the result of extensive research.

Understanding the need of the client is important.

Collect the information like – who are the client, what they do, how they work and what is their target market.

Go through the previous logo if available and then think about the upgrade version.

Do research online to get inspiration.

Research of the target audience or customer is also necessary.

Giving value to customer’s perception and designing the logo in such a way that it will not hurt sentiments of the people is necessary.

Logo design is not only about creating an appealing visual but also building up a brand.

The logo should communicate between the client and its target customer; so market research is important.

Logo design should be simple so that customer can easily register the brand in their mind.

Explore With Typography Critical Thinking, Creative and Planning is the basic rule.

To create a design for logo the best way is to use pen and pencil to sketch out the ideas.

Sketching with help to do experiment freely; you need to save the sketches for the future reference also.

Take care of the pencil strokes or shades while designing the logo; use the alphabets in a stylised way.

Typography is the main part of an effective logo.

Either one can create a customized typeface or use a pre-set one.

Keep the typeface simple, readable and classy.

After doing the pen and pencil sketch, work on computer software to design Logo.

Today software comes with in-built typography; the artist can do research and then select the appropriate typography suitable for the brand.

The artist can use typography to embed hidden message in the Logo.

Experiment with typography will help the artist to build corporate identity.

Letters and typography style should be used in such a way that it could create a hidden figure as a message of a company.

Typography is subject to trends, so choose the font carefully.

A logo helps to distinguish a brand from its competitors, so it’s important to make the image of the logo unique from the rest.

Play with Symbols

In the above picture we can see very familiar symbols which we come across in our daily life.

Brand message can be easily conveyed through symbols.

Give your logo a unique symbol so that the people can remember it easily.

A simple test or a simple image is easy to memorise rather than the complex one.

For logo designing get inspired from different resources such as design centric websites.

Something which will make you happy is the potential root of an awesome idea.

Select the Colour Tactfully

While designing logo, colours play an important role.

Bright and bold colours grab’s the attention more easily.

Every colour has its own significance and it can add fresh idea or message to the logo.

Each colour has its own property such as Red is for energetic; Orange creative, Green is for growth, Pink is for fun etc.

Choose the colour from the company’s other graphic designs.

For example this NBC (National Broadcast Company) Logo has many colours and it shows the features of a peacock.

Here colours are used in such a way that we can see peacock in Logo design.

To add hidden message in the logo use the space carefully to add colours.

Colours should be used tactically.

Keep the Design Simple

A simple Logo is easy to remember, avoid putting too much detail into the concept.

Simple Logos are easy to recognise from a distance.

Choose the easy to read font.

It is not necessary to show what the company does in the logo, example Marlboro Logo doesn’t have a cigarette or BMW doesn’t show a car.

A logo works as identification for the company.

A well-designed logo represents the so called company and what that company stands for.

A good designed logo also helps the public to differentiate it from the other competitors.

A logo appears on many platforms such as websites, business cards, billboards etc.

Logo should have flexible size and content depending upon on which platform it appears.

A good logo design works on printed materials as well as various digital platforms like mobile devices.

Avoid using too much of effect as the logo need to look great across different platforms.

Lots of effect may make the logo beautiful but it won’t be translate well to different media platforms.

Start with ordinary black and white effect and then do experiments with other colour contrasts.

Timeless

If you look at Coca-Cola Logo, it hasn’t changed much since 1885.

Design a logo which will be effective for 10, 20 or more years.

Think about the longevity and not about few months or years.

Trends will come and go but the logo should undergo the ages.

Demo Reel Advice For VFX CG Animation Students

Is my demo reel is satisfactory for this studio?

Every CG or VFX artists face this type of question in their career span.

If you are looking for your first job in animation, visual effects or computer graphics then creating an excellent demo reel to show studios is crucial.

Your demo reel should offer something unique, entertaining and engaging.

Let us discuss about the crucial points which VFX-CG-Animation Students should keep in mind before preparing the Demo Reel.

Creating a Demo Reel which will showcase your talent and will make you stand out from the crowd in the competitive market is something to be focussed.

After discussing with several VFX CG Animation supervisors and artists of reputed Production Companies we gathered several important factors necessary for Demo Reel.

VFX CG Animation students should follow the guidelines before designing the demo reel.

Tips To Make Your Demo Reel Stand Out

The Demo Reel should be interesting.

Opening the reel with a great acting shot and another will grab everyone’s attention.

A mid close-up shot sells emotion well; let the feelings of the characters convey to the audience that will make the audience hooked to the demo reel.

Editing is the key part here; proper selection and arrangement of shots will add wow factor to your demo reel.

The reel can do tricks with the viewer.

Entertain your viewer with unique visuals by thinking out of the box; read the job description carefully to find out the need of the studio.

Recruiters prefer a tight and short demo reel; give you maximum effort to make the three minute reel interesting.

Don’t be insecure about the length of the demo reel as every frame counts; even ten seconds of amazing animation can beat one minute of ordinary animation.

In fact a demo reel of one or two shot with duration 30 second can also win heart.

Demo reel should be short, simple and interesting.

Be attentive on your skills and strengths.

Most of the time we want to add too much rather than focussing on the simple element; lack of focus can hamper the demo reel.

If you have the talent to draw, paint or sculpt include that in your reel.

If you are an animator create a unique character; don’t copy the popular character and do walk cycle turn-tables.

30-45 seconds of animation is enough in a demo reel as the recruiters is reviewing 30 more demo reel.

Make the dialogues interesting to tell the story; don’t show violence

The emotion in the dialogue sells the product; animating only the eyes and eyebrows of a character can sell the shot.

Just a slight movement of eyebrow can change the whole facial expressions.

Never put a shot in your demo reel until and unless you are 100% satisfied.

The Animator who will review your demo reel will wonder about your judgement of quality; bad selection of shots will lead your reel into the bin.

If you are a modeller then showcase your understanding of surface texture and lighting.

Don’t use rave music as most recruiters turns off the volume at the time of viewing the reel and listens only for lip sync on an animation reel.

VFX CG or Animation students should impress the recruiters with the pictures not with music.

Show your ability to learn new software.

If you are a VFX artist then concentrate on digital matte painting, particle simulation or meshing.

Get your hands in high definition footage, put incredible complex elements into demo reel to show the reviewer that you understand the concept of key, fill and bounce lighting, shadows, depth of field, colour.

VFX Compositors should know Nuke very well.

Working in the VFX field need professionalism; VFX is challenging and fun so respecting yourself and co-workers in the key part.

Be professional and respect your recruiters’ time.

While submitting a demo reel student should remember to add a cover letter, a shot breakdown and reel outline along with resume.

Mention about the software and operating systems used in the making of demo reel.

In your demo reel don’t mention about the software which you have used only one time.

Labelling should be done clearly and the delivered media should play easily.

Don’t forget to keep an online backup link of your demo reel.

Demo reel material should support the type of job.

Your material selected for the demo reel should well match with the companies requirements.

If you have interest to do high resolution creature work for movies then create some complex ZBrush material with rigged and mesh models.

Create your demo reel up to the standard of your dream job.

Good attitude is also important as the reel.

Impress your recruiters by your imagination and hard work.

If you fail to get the job don’t get discouraged, get the feedback and apply gain.

Reel must deliver your calibre to work within a complex pipeline.

Your reel must show how efficient you are to work within the collaboration.

Be open to work for partnership in schools, advertising, new media, industrial design and sculpture.

Working in collaboration will help you to develop your skills, patience and understanding.

Cross-training is important now days in the field of digital art.

Digital artists can gather experience while working with traditional animation team.

Modeler should study anatomy of human and animals to get the detail knowledge about figures; Modelers must understand concept of the work.

These day studios expect your reel through a link such as Vimeo or You Tube.

When the demo reel is ready to be seen it is necessary to decide upon your video sharing platform.

Vimeo is the industry standard.

Remember students Demo Reel with unique contents always get attention and easier to remember.

2D to 3D Conversion With Stereoscopic 3D

Hello readers, let’s look upon 2D to stereoscopic 3D conversion in this blog.

The process of transforming 2D flat film to 3D form is called 2D to stereo 3D conversion or in other words it is a technique to enhance the illusion of depth by means of binocular vision.

During this conversion process depth perception is added into the digital images.

The conversion should be done with sufficient accuracy and correctness; the quality of 2D images should not deteriorate.

As more and more films are released in 3D now days, 2D to 3D conversion is becoming more common today.

More often non-CGI stereo 3D blockbusters movies are converted fully or sometimes partially from 2D footage.

Film like Avatar contains 2D scenes and converted to stereo in post-production.

Financial, Technical and Artistic are the reasons behind the shooting in 2D instead of Stereo.

The need for high quality stereoscopic images is growing; 2D to 3D stereo conversion will grow large in future.

Reason For 2D To 3D Stereo Conversion

2D to 3D stereo conversion gave a whole new dimension to Disney movies.

Animated films like Toy Story 3 or Tangled have generated stereo imagery from software like stereo-RenderMan.

3D provides the third dimension of depth which can be perceived by the human vision in the form of binocular disparity.

The advancement in the field of computer animation provides a second camera view which gives depth and volume to each and every 2D frame.

Filming in 3D requires various parameters and is expensive, bulky and complicated; stereo post-production is also expensive and time consuming compared to stereo conversion.

There is a high chance of various mismatches in stereo image like tilt, colour shift, vertical parallax during stereo camera shooting and it can be more complex than stereo conversion.

Stereo post-production is more complex, requires more work, time consuming and not well-established.

Stereo conversion is more cost effective and easy to achieve rather than stereo camera shooting or stereo post-production.

The stereographers uses as many digital retakes as required to perfect angle and depth in order to maximise the quality of each sequence in movie.

By the technique of stereoscopic 3D film artists create visual perception of a 3 dimensional image from the 2D flat surface or 2D image.

Stereoscopic supervisor Bob Whitehill at Pixar Animation Studios says he sets the parameters on a shot-by-shot basis.

Methods of stereo conversion use depth maps based rendering.

A depth map has grey scale that contains information about the interval or gap of the surfaces of scene objects from a viewpoint.

Depth Map is needed to determine the right distribution of the objects for the second eye.

Conversion of 2D image into 3D stereoscopic needs a good depth map first; depth map is consists of various shades of gray to show the depth of every part of the frame.

It requires reconstruction of 3D shapes from single or multi-view depth maps.

Steps for depth based conversion methods are Depth budget allotment, every important surface should be separated and depth map should be created.

Image segmentation, depth map creation are time-consuming steps.

People attached to such work are called depth artist.

Multi-Layering is another technique for 3d stereo conversion in which multi-layering involves implying a depth map to more than one slice of the flat image resulting in a much better depth.

3D reconstruction is also used in stereo conversion; it works well in the scenes with static rigid objects such as shots with buildings, interior shots and soft fuzzy edges.

Key to good 2D to 3D conversion is Depth Maps quality.

Usually depth maps are created for each frame present in the scene.

A good conversion can be achieved by maintaining overall nice working relationship with supervisors.

Filmmakers should make a good film in stereo rather than good stereo film.

Stereo conversion is applied in converting older films such as Star Wars.

Studio like ILM converted Star Wars films for director George Lucas.

Roto tool is used for stereo conversion by volume; it is a time consuming work in conversion process.

Roto helps to outline any character in shot.

Prime Focus converted The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

In the film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader the team used View-D to convert mono shots to final stereo shots in about 8 weeks.

View-D 2D to stereo 3D conversion tool is another example; used after roto.

This was developed in Prime Focus by Chris Bond.

View-D tool allows artists to work on roto and then build second eye and stereo effect.

Ocula has been made by The Foundry in London for stereo post-production; it produced high quality disparity maps for high quality solution.

Many VFX houses use Ocula; it was used for Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

High quality conversion methods should deal with problems like Reflections, Film Grain, scenes with fast erratic motion etc.

In case of automatic conversion, a depth map of the entire scene can be calculated through camera motion.

In 2008 Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films depended on In –Three for the live action 2D to 3D conversion of movie G-Force and Sony Pictures Image works converted CG animated scenes.

Disney returned to In –Three for the film Alice in Wonderland.

In-Three was founded in 1999 and patented a process called Dimensionalization t which helps to convert 2D films into high quality 3D films or development in stereoscopic reconstruction of two dimensional images.

Artists face challenged in handling finest details in Alice in Wonderland as women had wispy hair; there were leafy trees and lot of vegetations.

Stereoscopic films have influenced cinema a lot and will continue to impress audience in near future.

Standard release of the film Clash of the Titans occurred first and then 3D converted version was released in the same year.

View-D conversion process was used to convert the movie into 3D.

If you wish to know more about 3D stereo conversion then do contact us.

Kalank A VFX Rich Movie Know How

The release of multi-starrer movie Kalank in the month of April 2019 left its audience spell bound.

Here in this blog let’s take a look in the VFX rich movie Kalank.

Kalank is directed by Abhishek Varman and produced by Karan Johar, Fox Star Studio and Sajid Nadiadwala.

Kalank is about a love story set in 1945 pre-independent British era.

The actors who played the role are Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Roy Kapur.

The main shooting took place in Film City Mumbai.

The film was made on a budget of rupees 150 crore.

Elaborate Set Of Kalank

Set designer Amrita Mahal Nakai worked on the beautiful massive set of Kalank.

To bring the director Abhishek Varman’s imagination into reality the production team did lot of research about the set decoration to make it as authentic as possible.

The set showed the famous Hira Mandi market of Lahore.

The story line of this film follows Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in the undivided India.

Amrita told that they retained the essence of Lahore City as it was in 1940s.

Amrita and her team brought back the style of architecture of that period of time.

To this grand set VFX artist added effects to enhance the scenes.

Bringing the director’s imagination into reality was a challenge for the set designer.

While keeping in mind the theme of the film Red colour has been used extensively in Kalank.

Red is the colour of love, passion, power and blood; it is an emotional colour and every frame of Kalank has this colour extensively.

VFX team used different shades of Red to make each frame vibrant and energetic.

The story of Kalank unfolds amidst the communal tensions during the partition so red is there in the plot and characters.

The shade of blue colour also used inside the palace which gave an amazing look to the set.

Blue canal water was matched with the colour of door and wall.

Not only the set, even the costumes, lighting and props also received various shades of red colour.

The gorgeous Madhuri Dixit in Indian authentic attire with red dupatta over her head and heavy jewellery portrayed the role of enchanting Bahaar Begum.

Bathed in the colour of red her eyes carried emotion of sadness and pain throughout the plot of the movie.

In fact the multi-starrer poster of Kalank with red background is mainly developed by the use of VFX.

VFX Enhanced The Scenes

In Kalank Alia Bhatt as Roop arrives in a dream-like town of Lahore.

The pleasant lotus ponds with cosy boats, floating huge lotus leaves, oversized chandeliers in the palace of Bahar Begum, lace curtains, horse carriages, costumes with intricate details provided a mesmerising effect on the audience.

From the wide range of colour palette VFX artist team selected the suitable colours to add extra spark in the visuals.

FluiidMask Studio located at Mumbai handled the VFX of this movie.

FluiidMask Studio’s VFX Supervisor shared that “Kalank has fair amount of VFX and it will be stunning.”

At FluiidMask artists worked on the colour correction of the shots to make the shots more appealing.

VFX artists gave the colour texture to the water and made the flowers more bright and colourful.

Beautifully designed lavish palace of Bahaar Begum is a visually treat for the audience.

Lighting and texture has been applied so intricately at every nook and corner of the palace that it left impressions on the viewers.

In the above image we can see the red colour shade at the background wall of the palace.

In the song ‘Tabaah Ho Gaye’ one can find her performing her trademark pose in anarkali suit.

The First Class song featuring Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani had almost 500 backup dancers.

Shot at the Hira Mandi set, this song showed the narrow streets, brick staircases and houses of 1940s period.

CG Bull-Fight Scenes

Varun Dhawan as character Zafar played the role of Macho Man.

Varun performed all the stunts himself under the guidance of action director Sham Kaushal Ji.

The actor went through rigorous physical training to make the body needed for the script.

The character Zafar is someone who flirts with life and danger.

The bull-fight sequence surrounded by audience was shot for 8 days on a hot sunny day in Mumbai.

But luckily the bull was not real, it was a CG or computer generated bull.

VFX team created the bull by using 3D model in 3d software and later added the animation to the bull for movement.

Fighting with real bull could be life risky so the CG bull was introduced in the null fight sequence.

The bull fighting arena has partly been crafted by VFX.

The back ground pillars and the broken wall structures were created with the CG tools.

The above image of Alia Bhatt with kite in the background of mountains is captured through the use of Chroma keying merged with VFX techniques.

The snow covered mountains has been inserted at the background during the post production stage.

As the film Kalank was mainly shot at the Film City Mumbai so it is quite obvious that this type of shot has been created at post production stage.

Kalank A VFX Rich Movie Animation Kolkata

This shot too is crafted by VFX.

The grand and huge set of Hira Mandi in the heart of Mumbai is not surrounded by the mountains and river.

But in the above shot we can see river and mountains at the background.
