When To Use After Effects’s Roto Brush Tool

Today in this blog we will study about when After Effect’s Roto Brush Tool can be used.

Rotoscoping is a process of tracing and isolation objects within an image.

It is a laborious work because here one needs to create a matte for every individual frame.

To rotoscope one second of video, one would need to do 24 to 30 mattes depending on frames-per-second and each and every matte should match the movement of the isolating object.

Fortunately Adobe After Effects has come up with a wonderful Roto Brush Tool to make the task of rotoscoping easy and simple.

With the new Adobe After Effects Roto Brush Tool one can do many ventures.

Adobe After Effects Roto Brush Tool is very similar to Quick Selection Tool of Adobe Photoshop.

Roro Brush Tool will allow to brush over the area one would want to select, with easy roto brush tool one can add or remove from the selection.

But the difference is that with rotoscoping one is working on the abundance of images rather than one.

Application Of After Effects’s Roto Brush Tool

Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects software developed by Adobe Systems.

It is widely used in post-production stage in filmmaking and television productions.

Roto Brush Tool is a tool which comes inside Adobe After Effects along with other tools.

Roto Brush Tool is a great help in case of visual effects and compositing.

The VFX artist can make use of this tool to the fullest.

Roto helps to create a matte that separate an object from its background and then one can change the background or can apply effects to the foreground.

Before working on rotoscoping; artist should study the footage carefully.

By studying the footage artist would be able to determine timeframe for the project.

Artist should have the clear view in mind about which section of the image he/she want to rotoscope.

Making A Selection With The Roto Brush Tool

Roto Brush Tool is used to draw line strokes on the indicative areas of the foreground and background elements.

After Effects uses the line strokes information to create a separate boundary between the foreground and background sections.

As Rotoscoping allows separating the subject from a background, it proves to be a great help when subject is not shot with green or blue screen; one can easily separate the subject using After Effects Roto Tool.

Once the subject is separate one can make adjustments to the subject like colour correction, changing the background, animated transitions and many more.

One of the main advantages of this After Effects Roto Brush Tool is that once a initial selection is made with the Roto Brush Tool .

After Effects will by itself introduce matte for the next 24 frames which will allow one to work at a sufficient pace of one second at a time.

After Effects makes use of each brush strokes to improve the results on nearby frames.

In case the subject changes shape from one frame to the next, the divided boundary created by the roto brush tool will adapts to match the subject.

To start with the Roto Brush Tool, first select the Roto brush tool then select the area and drag the brush tool to make selection.

Once the first selection is complete, it will serve you as base frame.

After Effects provides its users different view options to see the selection.

One can see the alpha option as black and white boundary or as a covering.

One can also see an X-ray view of edge selections.

Rotoscoping as VFX tool is used in almost every movie and television shows.

In case of feature film rotoscoping process may take hours or days to complete.

Rotoscoping is an art form so mastering it will need time, patience and skills.

Roto Brush Tool Used To Change Background

In the above picture we can see the effect of rotoscoping, in the right window box the subject is separated from the background by applying Roto brush tool.

On the left window box we can see the background image has been changed to more beautiful scenic view with sunset, clouds and trees.

The foreground subject is the same in both the pictures.

After Effects Roto Brush Tool has the ability to create complex curve lines.

Users can use Roto Brush Tool as a dragging brush tool.

The beginners can simply select the Roto Brush Tool in the toolbar and work to make the foreground bright or to darken the background.

This tool can also help to clone the people or to add text between components on screen or some other crazy visual effects.

Separating a very complicated shaped person or object with the help of Roto Tool could be very time consuming and tough job.

For example in case of two people fighting, it could be impossible to follow the actions of both the person correctly with one single selection outline.

After Effects Roto Brush Tool also allows the artist to fine-tune rotoscope in a simpler environment.

After making a rough selection through Roto Tool, Refine Edge Tool should be selected and applied.

Roto Brush And Refine Edge Tool

Refine Edge Tool is used to achieve a clean rotoscope along with Roto Brush Tool.

If the artist is not frequently rotoscoping the images then he/she can invest time in fine tuning the rotoscope image.

It is necessary for the VFX artist to learn the application of Roto Brush Tool and Refine Edge Tool so that he/she could work efficiently.

It is also necessary to select the motion blur in the Roto Brush Parameters, so that the edges can flow naturally if the subject has lot of motion.

After Effects Roto Brush Tool is a simple, fast and great option for clean VFX Rotoscoping rather than working on drawing and animating masks.

Previously Rotoscoping was a tedious work but now with the advent of users friendly software Rotoscoping has become fun and exciting.

Every VFX artist both professional and aspirant should learn this technique even if they are more interested to create the explosions effects.

Visual Effects In Mowgli Legend Of The Jungle

Today’s blog will provide the detail information about the visual effects used in the film Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle.

Both Live-action as well as animated movies has been made on the Rudyard Kipling’s famous fictional character Mowgli.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle released on the Netflix and selected theatres in 2018.

Huge viewers will be able to see Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle online due to its release on Netflix.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is about a naked feral boy child rescued by a panther (Bagheera) and raised by a family of Indian Wolves.

Rohan Chand an American child actor is the protagonist in this movie.

Andy Serkis is the director of this film who is best known for his performance capture roles in the films like The Lord of the Rings, King Kong etc.

Mo-Cap For Computer Generated Creatures in Mowgli Legend Of The Jungle

Actor Rohan Chand who played the role of Mowgli is an orphaned boy who is bound to choose between human society and jungle.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is a combination of live-action along with CGI or Computer Generated Imagery.

Motion Capture is an important VFX technique which has been performed in this film by actor Christian Bale for Black Panther Bagheera.

Bagheera protects Mowgli in the jungle, he is sensible and wise; he knows that Mowgli belongs to the humans in the village.

Mo-Cap with head mounted camera captured the actor’s performances.

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch did the Mo-Cap for Shere Khan, a Bengal tiger.

The ferocious Shere Khan is hampered by a lame leg.

Cate Blanchett did performance capture for Kaa, an Indian Python; narrator of the film.

Kaa is dangerous uses hypnotism to get over Mowgli.

Naomie Harris gave Mo-Cap for Nisha the female wolf, who adopts the baby Mowgli as her wolf cubs.

Akela, head of the wolf pack is played by Peter Mullan.

Akela is like father figure to Mowgli but as Mowgli grows he thinks that his family will be safe from Shere Khan if Mowgli moves to man’s village.

Tabaqui Hyena is a new character to many as he was never featured in the Disney adaptation of Jungle Book.

Performance capture done by Tom Hollander for Tabaqui a sly hyena who serves as messenger to Shere Khan.

John Lockwood a hunter shoots Akela, before dying Akela gives his blessing to Mowgli to lead Jungle’s creatures and the wolf pack.

Serkis himself did Mo-Cap for Baloo the bear who is one of the Mowgli’s teachers.

Baloo is a biggest character with a heart of gold and a close friendship with Mowgli.

Baloo is less responsible than Bagheera and don’t understand why Mowgli can’t stay in Jungle.

Serkis is the master of Motion Capture, so his Baloo is someone special.

The plot of the film follows Mowgli who gets captured by the villagers.

Messua played by actress Freida Pinto adopts wild Mowgli and thinks he is her long-lost son.

As the villagers were Indian their costumes were very similar to the authentic Indian dresses.

During the end of the film Mowgli kills Shere Khan and ends the reign of terror.

In the Mo-Cap process sensors captures the facial details and transfers it to the CG characters.

Most of the shooting for this film took place in South Africa and at Warner Bros. Studios in England.

Live-Action Merged With CGI

Animation Supervisor Max Solomon believes that actor’s sensitive performances are transposed onto the 3D creatures by the animators which makes the audience engage with what they see on screen.

Framestore studio created the animal creatures which reminded us of the actors through their eyes.

3D software were used for modelling the animals, 3D animals were given motion through the Mo-Cap techniques.

Framestore, Black Ginger and Rodeo FX did the visual effects for this film.

Framestore did 1164 shots of visual effects for this film.

Studio artists used in-house muscle and skin simulation technology on the animal characters.

Maya’s nCloth feature was used to add layers in detail.

VFX Supervisor Nigel Denton-Howes supervised the overall visual effects whereas Rodeo FX used creature FX simulation to sharpen facial expressions of the animals.

Jungle creatures with their in-depth facial expressions have made the story much lively.

Along with Mo-Cap different Simulation software added the details in the creature’s body.

Motion Capture and Animation together created visually stunning world of Rudyard Kipling’s popular story.

At Rodeo FX Visual Effects Company which is located at Canada, Computer Generated team animated Shere Khan in a dynamic way.

Stunning World Of Rudyard Kipling

Team united actor Rohan Chand in a CG photo-real environment surrounded by Computer Generated elephant.

CG elephant were crafted in the 3D software while the sounds of the real animals were added later on.

To create Jungle environment Framestore searched from the extensive plant library from the software.

FX team worked a lot to develop the interactive things needed to bring the plants to life.

Selecting the flora and fauna, then merging it with the live-action is an interesting task as well as laborious.

Many actions have been shot inside the studios with the Green Screen and later real background was added.

Lighting was also adjusted to make the jungle bright and fresh.

The whole process of adding visual effects were done at the post-production stage for which Serkis did lot of planning and sketching.

Truly Andy Serkis has the power to develop a performance beyond what is shot.

Andy Serkis moves his camera in impossible angles through the caves, tracking shots and down cliffs.

Human actors wore stilt walkers over the Mo-Cap suits to imitate the height and posture of the animal they are playing.

Mowgli: The Legend of Jungle is a mad fantasy world where characters had bodies of human but the untamed spirit of a creature.

It is a film between man-made and computer-made and Andy proves himself as courageous to explore.

This film received positive reviews from the critics who praised the cast, visual effects and Serkis’s direction.

VFX Technology Used To Create Magic On Screen

Today this blog will inform you about how VFX Technology is used to create magic on screen.

We all have watched those nerve-racking shots on the big screen where actor jumps from the tallest building or performs life threatening stunts.

But the fact is that those stunts are not that dangerous as they look on the big screen.

And the reason behind it is the magic of VFX Technology.

Hollywood’s larger than life movies like Skyscraper or High-Rise has VFX Technology loaded visuals which makes us to believe in the unbelievable incidents.

The definition of VFX says it is the combination of live-action footage and computer generated imagery to create an environment which looks realistic.

In the movies VFX is used to create stunning shots which would be dangerous, expensive and impossible to capture using film camera.

VFX Technology packed movies not only keep the audiences glued to their seats but also has opened a new area for the professionals to explore and innovate.

VFX Technology Magic On The Screen

We as an audience love to see magic on the screen.

On screen magic takes us to the world of imagination.

Hollywood has a long list of movies where magical things happened with the help of technology.

Remember all those Disney movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin where beautiful visual effects have been incorporated with the live-action.

Fantasy world of Disney Movies makes the time stills and takes the audience to the childhood environment filled with love and fun.

The purpose of VFX technology is to provide help in filmmaking.

A film needs a very vast set which requires expenditure and labour.

It is much easier to create a set digitally rather than physically to save time and reduce labour cost.

The war sequences in the movies shows huge mass of army but practically few hundred peoples have been used actually in the shooting location.

For example movies like Bahubali or The Lord of the rings used vast set of soldiers create with the help of CGI.

Many times stunts performed by the stunt man can be replaced by the actor digitally.

Removing unwanted extra or explosions are too easy act with the help of computer.

Digital technology helps us to add backdrop or correct the errors to give a perfect experience of a film.

In the movies VFX loaded scene requires a lot of planning and innovation as because VFX is the main part of storytelling.

VFX Technology usually used at the post-production stage but the filmmaker plans about it at the pre-production stage only.

There are various tools which helps in creating mind-blowing Visual Effects.

Techniques To Create VFX Tricks

Written by J.K Rowling the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has an extensive VFX content to bring the magical creatures of the wizard world to life.

The visual effects of this movie transported us to a world that does not exist.

CGI Technique

Any Images that needs to be drawn or created using a computer tool is called Computer Generated Imagery.

Film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them introduced a new world of CGI creatures and new digital environments to the Harry Potter fans.

CGI can be 2Dimensional or 3Dimentional.

The magical 3D creatures were created by famous Framestore Studio’s team of animators in this movie.

This film became the first Wizarding World Film to win an Academy Award.

Motion-Capture Technique

VFX techniques like Motion-Capture widely used to track the movement of the creatures.

In this technique of Mo-Cap movement of person is recorded through sensors.

Movie War for the Planet of the Apes has used this vfx technique a lot.

Forced Perspective Technique

Movies like Elf and Harry Porter used VFX Technology Forced Perspective to create unbelievable shots.

In Harry Porter movies fictional character Rubeus Hagrid looked like a giant by the use of forced perspective.

Forced Perspective creates optical illusion to make an object appear far away, closer or larger than its actual size.

In the movie Elf oversized human struggles to fit in with Santa’s elf community.

3D Modelling Technique

Shah Rukh Khan starred movie Zero used 3D modelling VFX tool to give a new look to the Bollywood actor.

3D modelling and sculpting technique gives shapes to all kind of characters and monsters.

In the movie Zero this technique transformed the body of the actor into a dwarf.

This technique is very much is use now days to make magic on screen.

HDRI VFX Technology & Techniques

HDRI method gave an amazing viewing experience to the film Echo directed by Victor Perez.

High-dynamic-range imaging (HDRI) is used to produce high range of luminosity which is not possible with standard digital imaging technique.

The wide landscape received a bright luminance effect with the help of this technique.

Green Screen Technique

This VFX Technology is used for joining two images together; here the colour in the top layer is made transparent revealing another image in the background.

It is also known as chroma keying.

Film-The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey used this VFX tool.

Rotoscoping Technique

In this process artists manually trace over motion picture footage frame by frame.

It is a vital process where you can take out elements from live-action footage.

The artists get realistic movements by tracing over the actor in the shot.

Animated film The Case of Hana and Alice was entirely animated with rotoscoping.

Crowd Simulation Tool

Crowd Simulation is the process of creating, rigging or texturing humans, clothes and props in large numbers.

Movie like Lord of the Rings used crowd simulation to generate massive crowd in the battle ground.

Adobe After Effect VFX Tool

Adobe After Effects tool is another VFX tool used for motion graphics, logo animation and title introduction.

This tool has unique features which help to perform different visual effects on the shot.

The film Star Trek has utilized Adobe After Effect to create moons to asteroids on the screen, planets were colour-corrected using this tool.
