Working in animation studio is not directly connected with your own personal interest; you are there to be a part of a team, and a project where one needs to work together.

Always remember, you are the newest member of the team, and you have to prove your worth and value as a team member.

Make every second count. No one in the team should have any doubt about whether you deserve to come back the next day or not. Instead of looking for fun, look for what more can you do to help the team to succeed.

Hold The Key



No one is indispensable. But that does not mean that you can’t try. After all, can you imagine Pixar without John Lasseter? No you cannot.

Each day will be different while working in an animation studio. Each day will bring new experiences, with new obstacles. And then there would be days when you will hold the key.

Unless you complete your job correctly & effectively, the project cannot move ahead. Make sure that you are the best person for the job. Being under the spotlight can prove to be a lot of pressure.

But concentrate on the bright side. This can be your chance to prove your price.

Do your best, so next time somebody must get employment done, your name is that the initial to appear on.

Presentation Matters



Working in animation studio could be a team effort. Therefore, everyone seems to be perpetually making an attempt to search out the proper set of individuals to have faith in.

Knowing your job, and doing it right, might not be enough.

The creative industry works on the rule, “everything needs to be completed yesterday”. To keep up the pace, plan everything in advance, and be on time.

Present your work with care. You always get the treatment that you give others. The same applies to your work.

If you don’t care about or respect your work, no one will. Don’t expect people to guess the details or understand your ideas magically.

Present them in a proper manner so that it is easy to understand. Even a small thing like spell checking your texts before sending can go a long way in establishing the accuracy of your work.

No dirty linen in public. You may be facing a personal crisis or you may not be getting along with a particular person at work.

Don’t create a scene. And don’t interfere in other people’s affairs. If people don’t respect you, then the brilliance of your work will only take you so far.

Each member of a team is the face of the team.

Being the most recent member you cannot shirk responsibility. Your behaviour and angle can replicate on the name of the team. Confirm that your behaviour provides nobody a chance to raise a finger.

VFX or Visual effects,  we can notice its presence and everywhere in advertisement , movies, tele- serials etc . There are hardly any movies today that do not use visual effects,  Last year too  i.e 2016 we had many good VFX movies which were actually a visual teats to us. 3 Big Challenges Behind Passengers’ Spaceship VFX Shots

MPC had plenty of  challenges to solve while shooting the VFX shots in Passenger Spaceship in the film, which, includes how to realize scenes of the spacecraft, the Avalon.



MPC’s visual effects for the anti-gravity swimming pool scene in Passengers after talking to VFX supervisor Eric Nordby here we are to discuss what are the various challenges he faced while shooting.

Here Nordby runs down three things he and his team at MPC had to tackle specifically with the 1000 metre long ship, from design to scale and then coming up with an appropriate environment and lighting in space – something that’s harder to do than you could ever think and imagine.

Let’s discuss the challenges one by one.

Challenge #1 – A Ship Design That Felt Like It Served The Story

The story being, it’s this luxury cruise ship in space that has to also transport 5000 people as well as all of the cargo and the rest of it and not just feel like a freight liner.

So Guy Dyas, the production designer, broached that quite early on. He was inspired by,  all things even a sycamore leaf, which is a leaf that when it eventually falls, takes the helicopters down towards the ground.

And it’s got this very beautiful sweeping design to it. And so that was an early inspiration, to go back to the natural world. That formed the basis of it and then they just went from there and modified the ship where  modification needed.

Challenge #2 – Selling Scale



This is a huge challenge to visual effects, especially when you don’t have anything close by. And because we’re in deep space for the entirety of the movie we’re never really close to anything.

There’s one moment where one has pass by a star but the vast majority of the exterior shots are just ship and then a very, very distant star field, a star field that’s light years away.

So we’re never close to planets, we’re never close to other ships. So to really wrap our heads around the appropriate scale it required some heavy thinking on what one could afford to operate, what we could afford to really add that sort of geometry component to it that wouldn’t kill us in render and the rest of it.

And so what became the guiding principal was to art direct the shot.

So  the shot was staged, and then whatever  got closer to  would just pour whatever resources we had into doing a paint up and whatever we had in terms of atmosphere and all this stuff we wanted to add in order to sort of help us scale.

Challenge #3 – Exposure & Speed



As a result of us being in deep space and not close to any stars, we sat down with Rodrigo Prieto, the director of photography.

A large portion of the movie is in exterior space and we wanted to pick his brain on how he would see that.

We’ve seen some incredible work lately, both Interstellar and Gravity and others.

We’d been going with this very, very high-key harsh light that immediately you get a huge mileage out of because it feels very NASA-like, it feels like what you would see in actual space photography – a very blue, harsh, one light, intense fall-off shadow. And so we talked about whether or not that was a possibility for him.

Well, firstly, it would be a complete cheat because we’re not close to any sun, and secondly, he didn’t like the fact that it would be a very ugly light for the amount of stuff we had in this movie.

It would have pulled away from what he felt his overall lighting design was going to be, which I thought was great because it allowed us to create this lighting dome which was based on essentially a nebula as opposed to any single source, which we kind of designed with a very soft ratio that was more similar to how Rodrigo was lighting the interior of the ship.

The next big part of that challenge was, how do you get that to look real?

Because obviously exposure-wise when you’re actually shooting astral photography you’re actually photographing nebula and distant galaxies and there are such extraordinarily long exposure times nothing we’re going to do is going to be in that world.

And so we really had to strike a balance of what we thought felt overly designed or under designed.

So we created a continuum of images for Morten and Rodrigo before we shot a frame of film, and we went all the way from extraordinarily stylized Guardians of the Galaxy-like – a very colorful world that worked so well for that movie to just International Space Station space walk photography.

And we just talked at length about everything in between and found our area that we felt comfortable with. And then from there we could backpedal and start to paint up our space-scapes and then try to get some depth in those space-scapes and create this absolutely massive build that would form the setting for the entire movie.

Breathing Life Into CG Effects: An Overview of Motion Capture in Films

Have you been marveled by Gollum and Smaug in The Hobbit, wondered about Davy Jones’s tentacled head in The Pirates of the Caribbean, felt the Hulk’s anger in The Avengers, or been awed by the Na’vi in Avatar? If you said yes to any or all… congratulations, because you have experienced an inkling of the magic that is possible through motion capture.

Called ‘Mo-cap’ in short, this technology was developed as a way to automate a popular technique that was used in landmark films like 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or 1978’s The Lord of the Rings.

In those days, to speed up the process of traditional animation, artists would draw over the motion of actors from a projection of live-action footage to produce the final animated footage.

Needless to say, it was a lengthy and arduous process: movement was first traced for main or ‘key’ poses (which came to be called key frames), following which the flow of action in intermediate frames would be filled in.












During the 1980s, there were several developments in bio mechanics, which led to such devices being used in conjunction with computers to produce characters and animation like some stunt doubles in 1995’s Batman Forever or Jar Jar Binks in 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. In the 2000’s, motion capture began to be more widely used.

Peter Jackson, in The Lord of the Rings films, used mo-cap extensively for the character of Gollum (played by Andy Serkis): an elaborate system of 25 cameras were used to record the actor’s movement and apply the information from the markers to a 3D model.

Serkis and Jackson teamed up once more to create 2005’s King Kong, where facial markers were used for the first time. 2004’s The Polar Express was the next milestone as a 3D film to be created using motion capture technology.

Its director, Robert Zemeckis, refined his technique in 2007’s Beowulf and 2009’s A Christmas Carol. The Pirates of the Caribbean films were unique as actors were filmed in mo-cap suits and markers on-set rather than in a studio as was done previously.

The breakthrough in realistic motion capture came with 2006’s Happy Feet (Animal Logic) – which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature – and 2009’s Avatar (WETA Digital).

The director of the latter film, James Cameron, a long-time dabbler in special effects techniques, even devised what he called a ‘virtual camera’ that enabled him to view the actors’ motion in their CGI avatars as they were being filmed.

The astounding level of detail that was captured sets Avatar apart even today in terms of quality. Motion capture that incorporated actors’ expressions in addition to body movement began to be termed ‘performance capture’.

Since then, motion capture technology has only moved forward. Peter Jackson’s WETA Digital continues to be a leading supervisor of mo-cap in films.

Andy Serkis, who has played several characters requiring motion capture, founded The Imaginarium Studios, which has provided cutting-edge mo-cap for films like 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (both of which featured Serkis as a main character) and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

We can only watch to see what comes next, but one thing is for sure: it will be worth waiting for.

What Is Storyboarding?

Storyboard is a sequence of visualized images based on the particular story concept for motion picture, 1motion graphics, animation films etc. It is like comics but in a much better updated way. Process of Storyboard preparation was developed by Walt Disney during 1930 for their own productions and gets followed by them and many more other production studios.

Example:

Three panels below showing us a small story as an example of storyboard for an animated film. Panel one is showing a character comes into the screen from left and goes out from right. Panel 2 is showing another character comes into the screen with an arms as if he wants to hit the first character. And third panel shows both the characters in th frame both running hard and this frame is an eye relief.

 What Is The Job Of A Storyboard Artist?

A storyboard artist visualizes stories and sketches those visualized frames of the story in pencil drawings in rough mode and from there to the finally approved panels.

Professional storyboard artists first plans characters according to the locations and also take helps of placing camera according to the required shots.

Storyboarding techniques.
Let’s take a small story and let’s try to board the same by simple camera placements.  
Story:    Roji the rabbit found his farming does well and feels happy. He is standing in the field while he found Jack coming towards him with a plough on his shoulder.      

In beginning, let’s have a conceptual image (Pic : 1)
which will reflect where the story is placed.  This picture of top planning gives us a rough idea where and how the characters are placed. We have also idea where is the east, west, north south sides are and according to that now we can draw some concept sketches by which we shall get correct positions of character and backgrounds.


In our first line of story concept we have Roji character is getting established with a happy satisfied mood and to enhance the same lets place him in front of his house.

In Pic: 2, we placed a camera in green colour to get the idea in much better way. Because we are targeting to sketch the rough cut panel to view the same written concept in a cinematic frame (Pic: 3).

Along with it we created one more frame (Pic: 4) where we have put camera movement information for compositing team to establish his expression as said in story.

Even we create another frame (Pic: 5) for further reference for viewers and compositors, as we know the character will see another character who is coming towards him.

And we also can see that all these shots are based according to the camera 1 position. In pic: 6 we can also see the camera is in same position to hold the expression of the character.


In the second line of the story we see that Jack character is coming towards Roji character with a plough on his left shoulder.

Accordingly we place the second camera behind Roji to explain properly to the viewers that the Jack is coming towards Roji (Pic: 7).

This shot is taken over the shoulder of Roji and that is why it is called an OTS (Over the shoulder shot) (Pic : 8).

These are basic way of panel by panel storyboards but there are more and more aesthetic feels to make it better for any show.
