Though it sounds scary, it isn’t.  Here comes the hilarious romantic comedy film from Fox Star Studios and Clean Slate Films, Phillauri starring none other than Anushka Sharma as the friendly ‘spirit’ or ‘Ghost’Shashi who narrates her love story and the reason why she has transformed into a ghost.

It is the story of mangalik boy played by Suraj Sharma who needs to marry a tree before he ties knot with his bride Mehreen Pirazada to escape the bad fortune.

From there, the story takes off and the Ghost spirit of Shashi floats in who apparently has an unfulfilled wishes that needs to be taken care.

As Shashi unfolds her tale, the flashback story takes us in the era from where she came from.

The visuals  effect shift from a bright, modern day setting to a contemporary one where we can observe Diljit Dosanjh’s character, who is Shashi’s lover, as a singer  from a  remote village in Punjab whose voice has the potential to ‘change the world’.

The trailer manages to arouse interest of the viewers with its well-scripted dialogues, astounding visual effect and the cast definitely earned lots of interest among its viewers.

While we can observe a serious tone attached to the flashback story, the present day scenario is filled with witty lines and comical situations.

The shift of scenes from the present to the flashback era seems seamless which can be credited to the work done by Vishal Sinha, Editor Rameshwar S Bhagat and excellent colour grading service provided by Redchillies.

The film with a ghost in it has lots of visual effect to bring the scene live and interesting. Director Anshai Lal has brought in one of the best visual effect studios of India, Redchillies to work on the VFX scene in the movie.

With good Visual Effects work the movie reaches to another level of visual ecstasy. Anushka Sharma can be observed floating all around as a ghost, which has created a celestial aura in the whole movie.

She has a translucent look, with details such as hair and clothing that floats and moves as she flies through the air.

And bringing this friendly ghost alive all credit goes to its visual effects supervisor Harry Hingorani.

Anushka’s histrionics as the friendly and entertaining ghost look endearing, and the visual effects add to the look.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion VFX Work Behind The Scene

Baahubali: The Beginning which was released in 2015 and from then ever since, the audience has been waiting eagerly for its second part, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. In our today’s blog we will discuss the amount of VFX or visual effect the film has incurred and its behind the scene activity.

While the first part was definitely epic as well as superb entertaining, but at the same time we have ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ taking the excitement of the audience to the level next.

Those who have seen the movie have been waiting keenly to find an answer to the life changing question – Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali?

While the world waits to know the answer with the sequel finally got released and we all got our answers too. But with addition to the answer the audience has got much much more.

The whole film industry is in awe of the film and its every frame that is no less than a visual masterpiece.

Each and every scene (both VFX and non-VFX shots) similar in terms of colour and it took a lot of time to complete and to give it the desired intense look and feel.

There were problem of bad light sometimes but the team had overcome it successfully.  Starting from brilliantly choreographed bow and arrow sequences to VFX scenes each and every scene is a treat to watch, Bahubali 2 had all of us awestruck.

Bahubali 2 happens to be a visual film and it has a lot of visual effects.

The film has create visuals that don’t exist in real life with VFX assistance it had actually made it possible to happen.

Visual Effect In Dabangg 2

Salman Khan’s action movie Dabangg 2, which was released in December, did a business closer to Rs. 200 crore mark the movie had number of visual effect shots. Today in our blog we we will discuss about the same.

The film was based on the adventures of a heroic cop the great Chulbul Pandey, enacted by Salman Khan.

In the success of the film the visual effects has an important role to play.

India’s leading post-production studios, Prime Focus, was in charge of the visual effect activates and the post production of the movie.

A team of around 120 VFX artist of Prime Focus in both Mumbai and Hyderabad was responsible for over 950 visual effect shorts in the movie Dabangg 2.

That too in a span of two months only. The team wasled by Reupal Rawal.

According to  Merzin Tavaria, co-founder and chief creative director, of Prime Focus, said, “It was a ground-breaking effort on our part as we were involved in the process right from the pre- production stages itself. We delivered a massive amount of VFX in a very short time span. Our work in Dabangg 2 goes to prove how VFX can add value to a narrative not just as a garnish, but a vital ingredient in the recipe for filmmaking”

The introduction scene if you remember where Salman khan enters with a jeep breaking a wall apart, hanging on to a car and landing was augmented digitally done which resulted in such a  dramatic entry mesmerising our eyes.

Talking about executing the VFX process of the film, Reupal says, “We designed the ‘time-slice’ sequence which involved the actor hitting the thugs hanging from a pole encircling it 360 degrees.

With multiple camera set-ups and freezing the moment to capture it in entirely with different angle.

The shots were enhanced further by retouching and improving the fluidity of the movement.

The team had done extensive compositing detailing job on the shots, CG work like bricks, dust and debris to added effects.

They used 3D dynamics simulation of the concrete slab cracking can you beat it.

In the ‘Dabangg 2 Reloaded’ song, multiple visual effects shots were involved in augmenting the over the top jigs to create more visual appeal on screen.

In the musical jig, Salman shows off his strength with pushing a water hydrant into the ground breaking the concrete apart.

In order to achieve this, the original plates did not have the hydrant in place; the hydrant was remade in CG which was synced with the live action plates to show the superb strength of macho hero.

To bring about more credibility in the shots, team had used a 3D dynamics simulation of the concrete slab cracking the particle emitting towards generating dust.

In the song sequence, to bring in a twist to the famous Dabangg 2 signature belt move, the team worked on the belt movement in post as well can you beat it.

The Dhaba sequence was shot in an urban location; to give the place a highway Dhaba look and feel, the team at Prime Focus digitally replaced the walls and buildings through matte paintings.

The team also recreated the cylinder blast digitally, so no harm was done to the actors keeping safety in mind.

Additional shots in the sequence augmented include, Salman kicking a table dramatically resulting in his sunglasses flying up in the air and eventually falling down on his lap.

Talking about the shots, Reupal says, “To stylize this shot, after the CG table breaks into pieces we added the CG sunglasses which flies off the table top somersaulting and landing on Salman’s lap.”

The bullets in Salman’s gun barrel were also made using CG.

“It was impossible to have sunny weather throughout the time”
Senior colorist  Mr.Ashirwad Hadkar set the overall colour palette of the film.

Talking about the visuals of the film, Rohan says, “The overall look and feel in the film was warm brown, it was challenging to maintain a grungy feel throughout the movie and to uphold a synonymous colour flow for the outdoor sequences which were shot in the city of Kanpur, in India.

As there were fluctuating shooting schedules, it was impossible to have sunny weather throughout the time, so the team graded the shots frame by frame to bring in similarities between the shots.

For instance, the climax scene was shot across for almost 15 days where the team achieved the look by grading each frame, and then matching it with the previous frame to maintain consistency and continuity.

With the film having a horde of VFX shots, DI came into play seamlessly merging the entire narrative.

The project posed several challenges, including the tight deadlines, but team ensured to achieve exactly what the director Arbaaz Khan had envisioned.

“The team worked on detailing in each of the VFX shots”

Talking about the experience of working in the project Reupal says, “We were involved right from the pre-production stage and worked closely with director and producer Arbaaz Khan”.

We had to ensure that the VFX used in the movie not only matched the storyline, but also helped audiences to recall 2010 hit Dabangg 2.

The team worked on detailing each of the Visual Effect shots to make it look as credible as possible.

Difference Between Animation & VFX

In our today’s blog we will discuss the basic difference between Animation & VFX or Visual Effects.

In the rapid advancement of technology computer animation has been available to the masses and the animation industry has turned into one of the fastest growing industries.

Animation in simple words is the process of making the illusion of motion and illusion of change by means of rapid display of a series of pictures or images that minimally differ from each other.

It is a technique of photography. The Images or pictures are designed and drawn. Then layouts are made. The successive images are photographed in such a sequence that it creates an illusion of movement.

The Cartoons on television is an example of animation.

Animation on computers is one of the main ingredients of multimedia presentations.

There are much software applications that enable us to create animations that one can display on a computer monitor.

To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced.

Animations can be recorded or stored in various equipment and formats. Some recording would be flip books, video tapes, motion picture movies or on digital media. Some of the formats on which animations can be stored are digital video or flash animations.

There are several techniques for making an animation. They are as follows:

Traditional Animation: It is sometimes referred to as Cel Animation. It is one of the oldest forms of animation. Here the images are drawn on a transparent piece of paper fitted on a page using a colored Timing is an extremely important factor in traditional animation.

Digital effects(commonly abbreviated as digital FX or FX) are the various processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated with or from photographic assets.

Digital effects often involve the integration of still photography and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create environments which look realistic but would be dangerous, costly, or impossible to capture in camera. FX is popularly used with the still photographer in contrast to visual effects which is associated with motion film production.

Salman Khan’s ‘Sultan’ used VFX

Salman Khan‘s  movie ‘Sultan’ was no less than a storm at the box office breaking almost every record the film proved to be a huge success. This movie has lots of VFX shorts which has enhanced the look and feel of the movie.

The film went on to earn a collection of over Rs 300 crores at the domestic box office in the year 2016.

Since the film revolved around the sport of wrestling world, its take was much bigger than any usual Bollywood film.

Yash Raj Films released A two-and-half minute video where it exhibit the breakdown of just how much green screen was used in the movie while shooting the wrestling scene in the movie Sultan.

It reveals many small bits of background scenery that were inserted via VFX into the fight scene and other action sequences in the film.

In fact, if you’ve seen Sultan, you’re probably going to be astonished to find out just how much was chroma-keyed in later – buildings, crowds and other pieces of window dressing were used to create the look and feel.

The film was also perhaps the most honest portrayal by Salman on screen.

The actor worked hard on his body and this reflects in the film indeed.

The visual effects used in the movie can be seen easily in the video. One can see how visual effects have added value to the film.

In one sequence, Salman can be seen jumping with a green background. But in the movie, the viewer sees Salman jumping from a building to another in Old Delhi and makes the viewers astonish with such tricks.

In another interesting scene, Salman is seen dancing on the popular number 440 volt. But in the movie, one sees firecrackers emanating from his hands. Obviously if it would have been shorted in reality such gimmicks would not be possible.

In another scene where VFX technology has been brilliantly used is to create the crowd in Salman’s wrestling matches.

His action pact wresting scene, modified the natural light with accordance with the scene, and to create all structures in the background during Salman’s run to catch a kite.

The green sheet, as seen in the video, is replaced by what actually shows up on screen.

Again it is a quick trick of VFX used interestingly in the movie to engross its viewers.

All in all, one can clearly see how visual effects have made the life of filmmakers easy. Otherwise one wonders how Salman can shoot in Old Delhi or any other crowded location without attracting attention.

Baahubali 2: the Conclusion Most Awaited Visual Effect Movie of 2017

Baahubali 2: the Conclusion is an upcoming Indian  historical  epic full on visual effect fiction film directed by   Mr S.S Rajamouli The movie is is the continuation of Baahubali: The Beginning.

The budget allotted to the movie is approximately ₹2.5 billion (US$37 million).

However the budget of the second part i.e Baahubali 2: The Conclusion   was increased a bit more, than the part one.

It is been said that the second version of the movie has made a business of ₹5 billion (US$74 million) even before its release.

The film is scheduled for a worldwide release on 28 April 2017. We all are looking forward for the same.

Baahubali 2 will be the first Indian film to be released in 4K High Definition format, requiring many of the theatres to upgrade their projectors in-order to run the movie.

3 Big Challenges Behind Passengers’ Spaceship VFX Shots

MPC had plenty of  challenges to solve while shooting the VFX shots in Passenger Spaceship in the film, which, includes how to realize scenes of the spacecraft, the Avalon.

MPC’s visual effects for the anti-gravity swimming pool scene in Passengers after talking to VFX supervisor Eric Nordby here we are to discuss what are the various challenges he faced while shooting.

Here Nordby runs down three things he and his team at MPC had to tackle specifically with the 1000 metre long ship, from design to scale and then coming up with an appropriate environment and lighting in space – something that’s harder to do than you could ever think and imagine.

Let’s discuss the challenges one by one.

Challenge #1 – A Ship Design That Felt Like It Served The Story

The story being, it’s this luxury cruise ship in space that has to also transport 5000 people as well as all of the cargo and the rest of it and not just feel like a freight liner.

So Guy Dyas, the production designer, broached that quite early on. He was inspired by,  all things even a sycamore leaf, which is a leaf that when it eventually falls, takes the helicopters down towards the ground.

And it’s got this very beautiful sweeping design to it. And so that was an early inspiration, to go back to the natural world. That formed the basis of it and then they just went from there and modified the ship where  modification needed.

Challenge #2 – Selling Scale

This is a huge challenge to visual effects, especially when you don’t have anything close by. And because we’re in deep space for the entirety of the movie we’re never really close to anything.

There’s one moment where one has pass by a star but the vast majority of the exterior shots are just ship and then a very, very distant star field, a star field that’s light years away.

So we’re never close to planets, we’re never close to other ships. So to really wrap our heads around the appropriate scale it required some heavy thinking on what one could afford to operate, what we could afford to really add that sort of geometry component to it that wouldn’t kill us in render and the rest of it.

And so what became the guiding principal was to art direct the shot.

So  the shot was staged, and then whatever  got closer to  would just pour whatever resources we had into doing a paint up and whatever we had in terms of atmosphere and all this stuff we wanted to add in order to sort of help us scale.

Challenge #3 – Exposure & Speed

As a result of us being in deep space and not close to any stars, we sat down with Rodrigo Prieto, the director of photography.

A large portion of the movie is in exterior space and we wanted to pick his brain on how he would see that.

We’ve seen some incredible work lately, both Interstellar and Gravity and others.

We’d been going with this very, very high-key harsh light that immediately you get a huge mileage out of because it feels very NASA-like, it feels like what you would see in actual space photography – a very blue, harsh, one light, intense fall-off shadow. And so we talked about whether or not that was a possibility for him.

Well, firstly, it would be a complete cheat because we’re not close to any sun, and secondly, he didn’t like the fact that it would be a very ugly light for the amount of stuff we had in this movie.

It would have pulled away from what he felt his overall lighting design was going to be, which I thought was great because it allowed us to create this lighting dome which was based on essentially a nebula as opposed to any single source, which we kind of designed with a very soft ratio that was more similar to how Rodrigo was lighting the interior of the ship.

The next big part of that challenge was, how do you get that to look real?

Because obviously exposure-wise when you’re actually shooting astral photography you’re actually photographing nebula and distant galaxies and there are such extraordinarily long exposure times nothing we’re going to do is going to be in that world.

And so we really had to strike a balance of what we thought felt overly designed or under designed.

So we created a continuum of images for Morten and Rodrigo before we shot a frame of film, and we went all the way from extraordinarily stylized Guardians of the Galaxy-like – a very colorful world that worked so well for that movie to just International Space Station space walk photography.

And we just talked at length about everything in between and found our area that we felt comfortable with. And then from there we could backpedal and start to paint up our space-scapes and then try to get some depth in those space-scapes and create this absolutely massive build that would form the setting for the entire movie.
